okay i know im pobably going to get booed off of this forum but i had a brainstorm last night as i was going through a box in my building. I found an electric squirrel cage blower(looks kind of like a turbo) and had this crazy idea,is it possible to make 10 to 15 hp by somehow rigging it on the intake?

97 ranger 2.3 5sp k&n filter, air muffler and baffle removed, headers, cherry bomb turbo, lowered rear to level.:3gears:

Your engine can pull more air than that thing could push. :icon_thumby:

not in line i was thinking as a y adding air to what the engine already pulls

actually, if you run the numbers, an electric turbo is absolutely feasable.

you require at least a 1HP electric motor, an alternator upgrade, and a decent compressor (no plastic squirrel cages. a centrifugal supercharger or compressor removed from a turbo will be required).

all this will produce between 1-2PSI, which could give you the 10HP or so your looking for.

With all the fabrication involved (this would be 100% custom right?), wouldn't you end up with the same amount of work (if not more) than doing a real turbo setup, but only to be left with an inferior product?

Not really...as there would be no exhaust work.

the alternator upgrade is bolt-on. connecting the electric motor to the compressor would be the only critical part that one would have to fab up. since it would be spinning at high speed, it needs to be a solid, straight connection. then its just a matter of intake tubing and wiring (pretty simple).

compared to the fabbing of exhaust on a turbo or a mounting bracket and idler pullies to align a supercharger with the belt, this is actually pretty straightforward. its a lot of work for only 10-15HP, but real power isnt cheap or easy to come by. 10HP is a noticable butt-dyno improvement.

I'm not one to be a nay sayer but I really wish someone would build one of these. I can't hardly see how this would make any real horsepower. And NO your butt-o-meter doesn't count as any real dyno numbers. Real world numbers only please.

Please don't reply to this with your "it looks good on paper". Go out and build one, put it on a dyno and post the video. In my opinion a electric turbo falls into the same category as The Tornado and putting magnets on your fuel line. It won't be worth the time in building it.

I stand ready to be corrected.

except for you can easily calculate the effects of an electric supercharger. the fuel line magnets and tornado...not so much.

im not going to go build one for you because i dont have the money or resources to waste on something like this. but the fact that it appears to be possible, even practical on paper would suggest that its even remotely possible in the "real world".

calculating the CFM an engine uses, and the horsepower requirements to produce that CFM is pretty simple math, theres not much room for error to occure. other than the fact that you dont like it because is unconventional, you have no reason to think it wouldnt work if the mathmatics support it.

ive got math to support my arguement that it could work. what have you got to counter my arguement with? "its never been done"? good point. in june of 1969, noone had walked on the surface of the moon....im sure your "its never happened, so it CANT happen" attitute would have convinced NASA to just give up.
