Have a 95 2.3 Ranger XLT with the venerable 2.3. Love my l'il truck and will never get rid of it. I've never talked with, or know anyone with a 2.3 Ranger to know if this is normal.

When starting, doesn't matter whether it's warm or cold, the idle surges up to about 2,800 RPM. Within a few minutes it goes down to normal idle (about 8-900). Idle alway's shoot's up at start. It has alway's done this for many year's. I've removed and cleaned the AIS (wasn't in bad shape). Installed a K&N. Seen no vacuum leak's, but assume normal idle after start would eliminate that. Changed the PCV valve (original with 103,000 miles on it) but that didn't do anything. Also new o2 sensor's, no help.

Other than the idle (and a few systemic problem's...wiper's come on at random and door open lite to fix when I get around to it) it run's great and has been very reliable. Normal? Or is there something I should check? Figure if I get this problem resolved, I should be pulling 6 inch wheelies at the dragstrip soon LOL.

mine always idles up for a couple seconds when warm. When it's cold it'll idle up for a while longer depends how cold. usually when I take off it'll go back to normal tho. You could try cleaning the IAC unless AIS is the same thing. So many different names people call the same thing. could also just try unplugging it then see if the idle continues to stay high or not. If it were me though I'd just drive it . :)
