I have a 4x4 94 ranger ext cab 4.0 with an overdrive trans(a4ld?). Everytime when the truck is in overdrive and the trans has to kick down to 3rd, the truck makes a loud bang, and it feels like someone just slammed the hood, doors, and tailgate at the same time.It does not matter how fast or slow, it does it at any speed. Upshift is fine no hesitation what so ever 1st 2nd 3rd or over drive, the only issue is from 4th to 3rd... Is it time for a new one or am I missing something? The truck just turned 179,000 miles. Any help is appreciated. Thanks:icon_confused:

Yeah, probably.

If it were ALL shifts, I might suspect slop in the driveline or perhaps the rear end.

I think you can replace the bands and valve body in this transmission without removing it, but someone with some A4LD experience should confirm that. That would be far short of a new transmission. But if there is any gear or drum damage or the clutches are worn out, you need a rebuild or replacement.

I was afraid of that, Its the original and hasn't been touched except for a couple fluid changes. I dont think I will mess with just a part here and there, I'll most likely get a new/rebuilt one. This is my every day driver. Any suggestions on a reasonable place to get one.

Trans has to come apart to replace bands...Valve body can be changed with tranny in truck.
