View Full Version : Mods to much??

I was talking to my dad about some performance modifications that I wanted to do to my truck 94 Ranger XLT 4x4 V6 bone stock as far as performance goes. I told him I wanted to do exhaust, throttle body, intake, and chip just naming off some of the things I was thinking about doing and he said that having "to much" can throw rods or pistons and break driveshafts if I am going to fast and hit a rut or mud hole....
So basically he was saying that modifying my engine "to much" could break things since its stock, how would I prevent that, other then improving the internals, was there anything specific? :icon_confused:

with those kind of mods, no way.
Spraying it, some sort of forced induction, or some really decent internal modifications (breaking - driveshafts, tranny's and axles would still be possible, engine too if not built to take it, technically) may start killing things.

Yeh he, like my dad, is probably trying keep you from spending money on a 14 year old truck. But what fun is that?

it all depends on how you drive it too. this goes for any vehicle with any modifications.
my 320hp escort is running stock axles, and ive never broken one even at the drag strip. meanwhile people break axles with stock motors all the time (talking about escorts here).

Yeah, to name all the things ive thought about performance wise..
1.) K&N Intake
2.) JET Chip
3.) 66mm Throttle Body
4.) Flowmaster Exhaust
not much but i just was double checking

you should be just fine especially if you're just driving it on the street. that is, unless you go around launching it all the time or other crazy stuff :P
drive like A**hole..eventually break stuff..big $$$ take it easy, youll be fine, unless your trying to kill something to replace it with something better. but hte mods you listed are common mods and if they do anything other than giving a little more power, they will make the engine run more efficiently, thus reducing wear and tear unless you beat on it, you should be fine. but like 97 ranger said, the old man is just trying to encourage you to save some $$...i did that and bought another ranger!!!

I really don't think you'll see much performance gains out of the intake and throttle body. If you don't spend a lot of time at wide open throttle, then the throttle body is definitely not worth it. What's the point if the throttle plate isn't open all the way anyway? You get more airflow just by stepping on the gas pedal.

eh..i guess....didnt really think of it that way ha, was just listing off some upgrades i guess
but yeah, i dont dog it on the street, cause....well, if youve heard about my truck, theres not really much i CAN do on the streets as its hard enough to get the tires moving lol
(which btw....yes, im re-gearing and dropping to either 35s or 36s)
i drive the truck every now and then, I do plan on wheeling it....but, i still have a little bit to go:headbang:

Those 38's are stressing things magnitudes more than whatever minescule gains you'll see from bolting rediculously overpriced crap onto the engine.
Don't get me wrong, I see the value in things like a chip, better exhaust, and a better intake (my explorer has a dual outlet exhaust with a welded muffler and an intake). But they're certainly not worth what they sell for. Now if you can make them yourself (the intake and exhaust) for pennies on the dollar vs. the name brand parts, then they have a case for being worth it.
A chip doesn't do much for a manual trans equipped truck. There's only so many ponies to found by advancing the timing a few degrees.

WTF?
i wheeled my b2 on economy street tires! get out there and fix things AFTER you break them. do maint. make sure the u-joints,ball joints, tie rods, fluids etc are good then go have some fun! dont be like the jeepers and build a rig for hardcore trails and run bunny trails all to make yourself feel good!

wheel like you would weel....if you brake somethin....fix it or change it after words

well...i actually thought about that but then i realized..
not only am i 16...and dont work enough hours and still have school
but....if ive got 38.5" tires and some sort of fuel issue, which i cant seem to find the right answer for then i would just run out there...get stuck...and sit and to be honest, probably wont have the slightest chance of breaking something unless i just sat there in the mud with my foot to the floor

dont you worry, upgrades are nice and i plan on forking over a fair amount of cash for a 4.0 or 5.0 soon enough, the clock is running out on the ol 2.9. i give it less than a year even if i keep providing it with life support IE lots of oil for its drinking and leaking habits. why replace something that still can complete its task? i mite be forced to do the motor swap once i get 36s because its cheaper than gears AGAIN. i love upgrades but i dont do them to make trails easier, i do it so i can complete harder challenges along with cause more damage! dont be afraid of broken parts, its part of the "wheel what you brought" idea. who the hell wants to run a truck on 40s down the stocker trails? that is like a funny car showing up for high school nite at the local track......

yea right, give me that truck for an hr on my local trails and watch the parts fly. i would spend more time replacing d35 shafts than wheeling!

Little things like that wont do any harm at all. But I have a wierd thing about driveshafts. I dont like stock shafts. It's not that I break them, I just hate driving in fear. Hell, My street truck has a F-150 shaft in it.

fear of what? its not like a bigger shaft wont go out of balance if you whack it on a rock for those of us that wheel, or that your going to break a stock driveshaft with a stock motor..... my brother had a 90 dakota that we would bounce off the rev limiter, hold the brakes and side step the clutch DAILY for a YEAR. i believe it had a chrysler 8.25, the c-clip(s) spun off (or so we think) and caused a train wreck of issues. the rear u-joints never saw a grease gun nor did they get replaced. if you have a motor strong enough to snap a driveshaft or the yokes while doing a burnout, the driveshaft is the least of your worries.

I dont really know what I fear, I just have some sort of "tick" about them. I like to know that my rig is built beyond what is necessary, not "close" to enough I guess.

As with anything if its close to stock it will hold up fine. Once you cross the boundary's then you have to pay to play.

well you said you had 38's right? sell the 38's find out what axle ratios you have. get the tire size that works best with that ratio. fix your fuel issue then save cash to wheel. also scout craigslist for deals, i mean hell, i got 1.5inch coils and 1.5inch ranger/exploder leafs for free off there. now my DD has a small lift and fender trimming to fit 31's
