i saw you had answered a question for someone else like this.
i have a 85 ranger with a4ld.
i have a 89 m van with a a4ld.
the 85 does not have the shift x. solind.
so can i use a 89 trans in the 85 ranger if i change the bellhousing?

how did you get an A4lD in an Astro? those have a 4L60 or a 4L60e

Nope the wiring on a 85 has only 2 wires in the plug and the 89 has 3 wires also the cooler lines are of a different size.

The shift arm (coming out of the tranny) is also different between those two years (column/cable shift VS floor/linkage shift) so the valve body would have to come out anyway.........

Yes.

But the pump also comes off with it. I've never rebuilt an A4LD, but i've disassembled many, mostly to "see" what caused it's demise.....
