I have a 1994 Ford Ranger 4 wheel drive withan a4ld and automatic shift t case. I was driving down the parkway when i noticed smoke coming from my truck, so i pulled over n noticed a bit of trans fluid dripping out onto the downpipe. the fluid looked to be drippin from thr open space in the botom of the metal gasket between the trans and the engine. so i needed to get to a guys house to pick up new rims and tires for my truck (go figure) n when i pulled into his driveway i felt a huge loss in power to the point where we had to push the truck even when i was like flooring it. I looked under the truck and there was a huge puddle of fluid on the ground. Well i checked the fluid n it was low beond belief. I had to tow it home. i think it might be the torque converter like maybe it cracked and dumped all its fluid? but now i have a big problem i got new rims and tires :yahoo: but a broken truck to put them on  thanks for all the help

If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
regardless of what caused it, that transmission is done. take it all out and replace or upgrade to a manual.

Front seal blew out. The converter will be shot for sure. The transmission is likely smoked now as well from you flooring it.

well good thing I still have a 90 warranty on the transmission. I would love to put in a manual holy crap autos suck they always do whatever they want. well i wasnt nessicaraly flooring it so im taking it to the trans shop to see whats wrong and just throw a new one in there. How hard would it be to switch to manual?

I put in two replacement A4LD's before wising up and installing a Mazda M5LD R1. I replaced it in my driveway by myself with only average wrenching skills.

Do yourself a favor and install the 4.0L clutch and starter upgrade at the same time as it is not any more difficult and not much more expensive than putting in a 2.9L clutch. You won't regret either swap.

Being that you have a transmission with a 90 day warranty i'm assuming that you had a transmission shop do a rebuild or sell you a reman? If so then the cost you have into it already at the transmission shop is probably way more than it would have costed to do the manual transmission swap. Actually for the cost that you probably spent you could done the manual trans swap AND most likely put in a manual shift t-case.

yup, dump the auto. find an M5odR1, I prefer transmissions from an explorer but thats because it will only be from a 4.0L.

Listen up A4LD-haters, if it was just rebuilt, it's obviously not the transmission's fault, it's the person who did not rebuild it correctly.

yeah and he could get it rebuilt again but the same guy that couldn't rebuild it right in the first place or do the manual swap and not have to worry about it anymore.

I have never understood that 90 day or 180 day warranties ...... if they couldn't build it right the first time then why would you take it back to the same guy.

Honestly if it were me I would take it back there and tell them to fix it BUT upon doing this I would tell them that I would be more than happy if they just repaired the transmission and left it laying in the bed of the truck. I would then tow the thing home, sell the auto trans on ebay and then install a manual transmission.

There are several members with over 200K miles (including myself, on the original engine and tranny, niether have been opened up). Some members have over 300K.

Yeah, after awhile, you spend $$$ on repairs, but you get used to it. It's still cheaper than a car payment.

I have felt that way every time my Ranger broke down, especially the couple times the auto trans puked out for no apparent reason. But once fixed I fell in love with it again.

One thing is sure; the Ranger with a Mazda trans and 10" clutch swapped in is a completely different truck than the original with a slush box.

I have a 2.3 with a 5-speed. gonna do the clutch/slave/throw-out bearing soon. Is it as easy as ordering a clutch for a 4.0 and bolting it up? or do I need a different flywheel and starter and all that? Or is the swap a 2.9 -4.0 only thing?

I am not sure but I don't think the 2.3 shares the same bell pattern, but I am often wrong.... maybe its the 3.0L that is different.
