just purchased 6 th ranger. Now own 2. TheTech library on site tells me to replace the transmission, a 2wd or 4wd transmission will work. Am I reading this info correctly? This is my first 4x4 kinda confused. Also the transmission has third and drives but wont shift at all(running or off). Previous owner had 90 weight in it Any chance of fluid change to dextron creating repair?Clutch and throw out bearing assembly all new by previous owner

you can only replace your 4x4 transmission with another 4x4 transmission. a 2wd trans. will not work.

manual transmissions dont loose gears unless something is very broken. replacing your fluid isnt going to fix the transmission.

the mainshaft is different between a 2wd and 4wd transmission. you could swap out the tail housing and mainshaft, but it requires disassembling the entire transmission and swapping the gearsets and everything over...in other words, its not worth it unless you absolutely cannot find another 4x4 transmission.
