recently lost 4th gear in my '86 Ranger. Sooo...I bought a different tranny, AND still no 4th gear. It pops right back out as soon as i let the clutch out. Could something be misaligned in the drivetrain? It's a manual Mitsubishi 145, 5 speed, behind a 2.9 liter.
 
no those trans are known for problems like that if you dont want problems get yourself a m5od trans they are much stronger and last longer.

4th gear is acually the input gear for the trans so its taking a beating most of the time. pry just the sliding clutch is wore out from being old. time to upgrade to the mazda trans.
