Ranger Trans Probs

My buddy has a 4x4 ranger with the A4LD. This is the second time he has lost 1st, 3rd, and R. Only those 3. Put in a new trans and the same thing happened. He builds track mustangs so hes no newb but he cant figure out whats up. Is this a common problem? Whats he doing wrong?
 
Reverse and 3rd gear have the direct drum(3rd gear)in common..so i would say that the 3rd gear clutches are more than likely gone. Now for 1st gear...does he have manual 1st?? if he does then the OD sprag or the OD hub went south.
