2.3 exhaust

so when i get my new engine in and all that of course im going to want to put new exhaust on it.

i want dual exhaust, both tips coming out the back of the truck.

Now what my question is, is should i go with just a straight pipe after the cat or muffle it? I dont want it to sound like a ricer, or for it to be really loud. i just want a nice sounding 2.3 rumble (if their is any.) so what would you guys' opinion on this be?
 
true duals are both hard to accomplish, and a bad idea on a 4-banger. if you want dual tips, your gonna need to split it somewhere.

there is no "rumble" in an engine with only 2.3 liters of displacement. a big, quite muffler would be an excellent idea :icon_thumby:
 
I wouldn't even worry about an exhaust manifold. Just take the passenger-side fender off! :icon_thumby:

you really cant get much of a rumble out of a n/a 4 cyl. turbocharged you can get a pretty nice roar out of them though :D
 
i was thinking y-pipe right after the cat. Im not expecting it to sound real good, i just want sound!
 
then y-pipe it and run straight pipes out the back. i believe after a certain year, ford started putting a header on the 2.3 from the factory..might want to get ahold of one of those as it will improve the sound some (and make it louder).

My 97 has a factory header and it really does sound pretty good. I have "experemented" plenty with the cheap mufflers and found alot about what sounds decent on it. Right now it has no cat converter, and a cherrybomb glasspack all on 2.25 inch pipe. The tip is in front of the right rear tire. I dont care what anyone says, you can get a good sounding ford 4-banger pretty easy. But when i get the money i'm going to get a Flowmaster Super 44 Because i heard another 2.3 that sounded hella better than mine with a super 44 and no cats. you get what you pay for.
 
because they are GTs, my escorts came with an actual long-tube header from the factory and it still sounds like a ratty four banger...it just sounds like a ratty four banger with a header on it (which is just slightly better than a ratty four banger with a manifold).

my $.02? the only good four banger is a quiet four banger.

well i would like to keep the cat on it. Hook a header from the engine to the cat, then do straight pipes out from the cat.
 
Yep, thats a good plan. I didnt mean to suggest you should hack the cat, it's just what i did. I bet it would probably sound a little cleaner with my catalytic on. And eventually I will probably need it if I ever live in a state with emission requirements.
 
i will second that super 44 series muffler. i have nothing but good to say about it. Sounds absolutelty amazing, and its a unique tone as well..people know its me thats cruisin' back to work or to a buddy's place. the factory header is pretty cool too. looks good an sounds good too. :icon_cheers:
 
When my 2.3 was still N/A I had, in the following order:
1. A factory shorty header
2. A 2.25" turbo muffler
3. A 2.25" flowmaster 40
4. A 2.25" single tail pipe with stock location exit.

I must say I was very impressed with the sound. It had a very soft rythmic rumble at idle. At 3000 RPMs it definately sounded like a 4-banger, but it wasn't too loud due to having 2 mufflers. At 6000 rpms it screamed pretty good.

I'm running 2 glasspacks right now and it sounds like a bumble bee. Not loud at any rpm.
