View Full Version : how do I get rid of this pest??
I've got some animal digging tunnels underneath the cement of my shop. I've filled in the holes 3 times now, even put glass in them, but he just digs around it. We have had a live trap set up for 2 weeks now, we've tried baiting with apples, tuna, bread w/ peanut butter, but we just can't catch the bugger. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem. I had a woodchuck or some other large brown animal digging under my shop. Everytime I saw a new hole I would fill it and pound a 2 ft section of 4x4 into the hole. I eventually caught him behind my shop trying to get back under and got him with the BB gun. I didn't do poison because my neighbor has outdoor cats, but it probably would have been easier.
I wasn't going for the live trap though....

I'v found the gooy canned catfood works well for skunk, possum, coon, rats, and badgers not to mention neighbors pets when they become a pest too.
peanut butter works for squirrels.

bb guns can be a slow creul death from infection.
paint ball(turned down) hurts more hurts more less injury, no blood.

Well, I didn't just shoot it and let it wander off. I gave it as quick na ending as I could.
my mom doesn't want to poison it because shes afraid it'll die out in the yard and then my dogs will eat it (they will, I've witnessed my greyhound eat a live rabbit whole). She wants to trap it and drown it so it won't suffer, if that makes ANY sense.
I'll go put some catfood out there right now, see if that works.

Napalm.
But yeah, try the catfood first.

Depends on if you have animals, or worry about the neighbors animals but poison works really good

Back at our old place we got HUGE rats. Our neighbors took care of their rat problem by "hurding" them into a pillow case and then they swung bag against a hard surface. Seemed quick enough, most of the time.
I worked at a pet store, and when we had deathly sick smaller animals, we put them in a box and froze them. They just went to sleep and never woke up.
Good luck,
Adam
PS. I also hear that a lot of animals are attracted to anti-freeze cause of the color and smell... Just a thought.
Your neighbors need cat replacement surgery. No self respecting cat would allow such a criminal act to be commited in their jurisdiction. Those Cleveland cats have no pride.
The shame.

my money is on wood chuck ....3 thoughts
wood chucks tend to be noctural (come out at night) sit up one night about 20-25ft away and up 10ft er so with ole 22 rifle. it's fairly quiet, (BB gun aint gonna do nothin but piss it off) and put one inbetween the eyes...no suffering involved won't know what hit it.
works better out in the open!! Works great on field goofers!
If your not afriad of some gasoline...appears to be inside of shop?? then not a good idea.
plug all known holes except one...pour a 1-3cups of gasoline as deep into the hole/opening as possible (no need for much digging on your part)...then light it...yes light it.
the flames then suck all the air/oxygen out of the tunnels/burrows and the critter sufficates. buried and all
or tie the neighbors big a$$ dog right there...er hold on to pooch and as soon as it get a few feet away from the hole let the dog loose. Little ankle bitters need not apply...wood chuck will tear em up...lab sized hound is better

Ooh anther line of attack....is mix/coat food, either dog food or peanut butter with ready mix concrete powder....MUST keep away from critters you want to keep.
place a dish of water separately a foot or so away
they/it eats all and then gets a drink....major/killer constipation to follow

I don't think its "stinky kitty"...if it is....the " snipper mode" with a 22 round between the eyes works pretty well....If they don't see ya 1st they have zero time to react...hence no stink.
if it is...the dogs & trap mode will deffinatly PURFUME they area.:no2::black_eye::shok:

what about running a hose down there for a an hour or so to drown the bastard?i've used that on gophers with good luck, just make sure you fill as many holes as you can find and cover them.then go around the shop looking for other escape passages, you might be able to shoot it then if it tries to escape.
I don't have a gun, no antifreeze cuz I have dogs. I'll dry putting the hose in there though.

Get a few leg hold traps. set them and slide them down in the holes.
that way the dogs won't get in them. Check the traps it will be in there. you won't even need to bait them, or a conibear trap layed over the hole will work but the dog could get in it.

Get a live trap put flybait and pepsi in a small butter dish. The flybait will kill it and the pepsi will attract it. It will die in the trap and then you can dispose of it. My buddy does this with his the Racoons that terrorize his sweet corn crop. The farthest racoon made it 30 feet from the bait. But of course he doesn't have any dogs to content with.
livetrap got returned the other day...I'll be turning on the hose in a couple minutes here. Hopefully nothing caves in lol.

Good luck, and if things turn ugly, just remember to aim for between the eyes; they're bad about charging when only wounded.

Or you could try smoking it with Flares. Lit a few fusies and put them in the hole and place something over the hole and let it breath in a lile smoke. Only bad thing is if it dies in there it will stink in a few days.

151 bacardi and pepsi. if he keeps digging in the same spot roll some posioned food in the hole and cover it. hopfully he dines on it and ends up dead before he can did is way out. personally this sounds like a huge excuse to stay up all night and blow the little buggers brains all over the shop then have a toast.

Alright, this has gone on long enough! ONE of us is going to have to go in there and get it. So let me be the first to raise my hand and say.... ..NOT IT! :no2:
j/k Any luck with that thing?
I filled the hole up with water 2 weeks ago.
I thought everything was good..then thursday night the little ****er dug out every single hole again. Time for the leghold trap.

New idea! Take a hose and hook it to your exhaust and run it to the hole, and fire your rig up and let it run for about an hour and gas that ****er dead.

I talked to an exterminater guy and he said this would be a bad idea do to in holes under a building, especially since one of the holes are inside.
You sure it's not a neighbor messing with you this time?
I only talk to one of my neighbors, and I doubt the rest of them even know I have a shop, considering you can't see my house from the road.

the problem is, I don't think hes even in there all of the time, I filled the hole up with water and he didn't dig it out for 2 weeks!
My mom put moth balls in all of the holes and all around the shop, and I'm gonna borrow a leghold trap. So hopefully he'll either stay away or I'll catch it.

Ok ive got a friend in trapping. You can do a lot of different things... Best bait is prob Peanut Butter
1) leg hold trap. snaps down on there leg,, Put down in hole or by enterance(sp bad)
2) Haveahart live trap( or HaveAGoodShot), same ordeal.. Be carefull,, in ohio its illegal to let critters go any where you didnt catch them,, alive.
3) good ol' .22
4)30-06 lol
5)This goes with the car exhaust, On the intlet of an air compressor, (where it takes in new air) have a hose running from there into your exhaust. When you see him run in there.. or whenever board off all the other holes and dump the compressed Carbon Monoxide in there. I have heard of a lot of people doing this.
6) Got any Oxy-acetylene? lol fillup his hole.. YOu may not have a shop later though

I recommend a lead-based spray.
My preference in lead-based sprays is called .22
when properly applied it will rid you of almost any varmint with as many
as eight legs to as few as two or none.
I have an old winchester model 67 which has a really long barrel.
with "standard" velocity 22LR ammo the sound of the shot doesn't
completely drown out the sound of the striker hitting the primer.
with subsonic ammo the striker falling actually sounds loud.
In either case it makes less noise than my expensive german air rifle.
The drawback is you have to sit and wait for the creature that annoys you.
Hell I just managed to kill a marauding mouse that was getting into
my supply of powerbars....
Hit him with a single pellet from my air rifle... DEAD!

I shot a big fat rat in the driveway yesterday with my .177 Sheridan pellet gun, got him right behind the eye and he dropped like a rock... Now my .17HMR would have literally ripped him in half...

That works with predators too. Only in a different way. You cover some dry sponge with bacon grease and they eat it, then the stomach juices make it swell up. It doesn't go anywhere both because it's too dry inside, and because it gets too large.

Actually, as soon as it was shot, even between the eyes, it would spray out of pain. And then spray some more after it died.. much like a human corpse spraying feces all over.
You sure it's not a neighbor messing with you this time?
Just watch.. hes going to put the leg trap in and little timmy from next door will get stuck trying to crawl back in the hole.
