I lost $300(all money was in stable funds) but a guy at work lost over $50,000!
So how much did everyone loose in their 401k's?

I know my dad alone lost roughly $25,000 and his boss lost about $75,000. Then we got in a discussion in one of my classes about it and this one girl said her parents (who have very good jobs out at Hanford in Washington) lost over half of theirs

An EXTREMELY depressing amount.

On paper, I lost a bunch but in reality I have not lost anything and won't unless I start taking money out now. Hopefully by the time I need it, the value will be back up where it should be.

Only a few g's since I've only worked a little over a year.
If you're young, a huge loss is irrelevent in a 401(k)...the market WILL rebound.
If you're 5 years or less away from retirement, you should move your equity into a gauranteed fund or gvt bonds.

It's all on paper until you start pulling it. One of my main stocks is just even for the year but has done good in the past ten/thirty years Best thing I did is pay the 30 year mortgage off in 11 years. Took all my over time money and paid the house off instead of buying toys.

I havent lost a dime, granted I am only 20 so... My stock market accounts have taken a hit, but its all still free money. For my second semester of my 2nd year of college I cashed out on a few accounts to pay for school. The money that I withdrew is what I have personally invested over the years. The money that I have in there now is money that I earned. Hell my small cap funds have been making money all year, my mid-cap funds have been steady, and large caps are the ones that are losing. But its all free money.

I have no idea. I have state retirement and only get a statement quarterly. I'm sure I only have $1000 or so in the account as I started it last March.

A little over 50K. But I'm not retiring in the next few years so it doesn't really matter. Now is the time to buy. Everything is on blue light special. Your getting a lot more for your money. I do feel sorry for older people who are close to retirement and the market won't rebound before they need to withdraw.
I lost about 30% of mine.

I was screwing with my dad the other day and told him "Pretty soon, You'll be working for me", because I have several retired guys working part time in the maintenance department. Needless to say, he wasn't too amused.

Just checked again. Now it's at -58K. That's 15% of a house, or 2 loaded rangers, or 11 ATVs, or 2 fairly nice fish/ski boats etc. I know that's it's going to go up, I just hope it happens soon. It is a little depressing looking at the numbers.

And no, not in my 401k - I don't have one, have never had one. Don't believe in owning stock in the company I work for. I'll draw my pay from them, but will NEVER rely on them for my old age.
