HAs anyone upgraded ignition from points condeser to electronic on your old traactor??

have 70' JD 3020 that tends to foul plugs easy...thinking up doing the upgrade. tried hotter plugs, hasn't worked well...it just don't get used enough...need it for snow removal more anything.

just curious as to what was used and how well it works

thanks

Oh gosh, Bob Ayres will come in here and tell you "ignition upgrades only hurt performance, stock is the only way to go, nothing is better"; watch out, he thinks he knows all, even on your tractor.

Maurice, your lack of reading comprehension skills are showing again! He is talking about upgrading the point-style ignition system to electronic, which will be an improvement.

Going from Ford's DIS and/or EDIS to a Screamin Demon would be a step backwards!!!

Ok did the swap to electronic ignition on the ole 3020...1st impression was WHAT a Difference . ran sooo much smoother.

Yes it was Petronics products...Pa got the coil too...

the thing that one needs to be aware of is if the distributor turns CW or CCW and whether it is positive or negative grounded systems. (industrial JD ran CW , Ag tractors CCW).

In this case it was CCW and as with most tractors negative ground....the other thing that JD did was ran all 6v to the coil...there is a resistor in the wire, newer models ,(likes Pa's) had a little box, just jumper wire around that and Wha-la 12v to the coil.

Petronics asks for 12v to the distributor or the + side of the electronic ingition. beings as we up graded coils we left it to hooked to the + side of the coil, as opposed to running the +wire of the ignition to the starter switch.

WORD of caution....do NOT hook up the wires of the ignition module wrong, meaning gettting the + or positive side of the wire of the ignition module on the - negative side of the coil and vise-versa. You'll roast the new electronc igntion module that you just purchased. You will not have any fireworks to watch, or cool mini mushroom cloud, not even a onimous "zap", you'll just be out the money , times 2, once to get it and then to replace it.

Petronics did supply pretty good instructions.
