Okay, here's a dumb question:

I have a 1997 2.3L Ranger. It is 2WD. I am converting it to 4x4.
I already have a D30 in the front, so I just need to solve the transmission issue.
I need to find a 4x4 transmission for it.
From what I've learned, I need to find a 4R44E from a 4x4 2.3L.
I've heard that the 4R44E from a 3.0L won't work.
I feel like this would be really rare, but I haven't looked much.

What other options do I have for my 2.3L?
I would be willing to do a manual conversion if it would be worth it.

I've heard good thing about the M5OD. Is this an option?
If not, what manual options do I have (for 4x4)?

I have a BW1354-electric that I am converting into a hokey manual setup.
The 4x4 would only be used for mudding/wheeling.
But the truck needs to be street-able.

It currently has a 2WD 4R44E. I've seen 4x4 output shafts for sale, for some big money. Could an output shaft from a 3.0L 4x4 be swapped in?

Thanks guys!

MAKG? My hero?

The M5OD would be your best bet if you want to go with a manual trans. I do have one at the moment. I am in Berwick, PA which is almost 300 miles away from you so if you're interested let me know if you would want it shipped or want to pick it up and I could give you a price.
