Took me about 1/2 hour to do this one tire. its my spare so I figured I test it out on this one instead of one of my new Tsls. before I did the groove pattern I grooved out all the wear bars, as this tire was free and is very worn down.

Ok well I guess I should give an update. Youll have to excuse the numerous posts, I was copying them over from another site that my build thread was on. I havent really had alot of time to work on the truck with school going right now. The major thing I have to do now is get my front suspension all setup and tacked in.

I converted my welder to mig, I was tired of the flux core. And all I can say is what difference. Its so much nicer with the gas setup.

Tacked the passenger link in, going to go back out right now and do the driverside.

I like the build up of option 2...

I remember a thread about those flipped rear spring hangers. Anyone know if that got moved?

Toreadorranger

I flipped mine but I dont like how they turned out so before the truck gets the trail im going to build something custom instead of the modded stock hangers.

Both options look really good, but I will have to say the second option looks visually better, and stronger for that matter. Maybe it is just becuase there is more metal there, I don't know.

The truck looks good, keep up the good work. Took me a minute to figure out why there was so much room behind your seats, then it dawned on me, you have the rear doors...

Woods-Rider

i really like the looks of that last one. needs a metal plate or somethin over that spare to make the bed more usefull though.

I havent updated this thread in a long time, so Ill give a brief update. Plans have changed. The front suspension is still a 3 link but it is no longer 3 seperate link bars. Im going to run a radius arm style link on the passenger side like a TJ or XJ long arm system. Example in the picture below.

http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/reviews/retjlift00/installfront.jpg

I have also since decided against an exo cage. So I will be building a fairly extensive interior cage, with the possibility of some of the tube connecting to a front support cage and a rear tube bed.

This is a sample cage I designed. I didnt take any measurements before drawing it so its proportions are a bit off. There will also be a X above the main part of the cage that I forgot to draw in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v69/redranger4.0/cage.jpg

http://teambigevil.com/Coppermine/albums/userpics/10001/parts_005.jpg
Ill be picking up my coil overs and coils for them this coming week. I ended up finding a KILLER deal on a set of 2.0 Fox 14" travel Coilovers with remote resi's instead of the FOA's.

I also have my choice of springs from jay's (seller) collection. Im going to grab a set of 350lbs/in and a set of 200lbs/in springs.

(AxB)/(A+B)= final rate

350x200/350+200=127lbs/in

These numbers are all based off of estimates. Ill most likely have to change the springs later on to get the rate I want but these will work for mock up.

what tool was used to groove the tires & where can a groover be bought at? As fa as the bed design I like the one using the tool box for straight wheeling ,but the full size truck style would be nice to have & install a few more bucket sets for your friends or enemies, or keep the stock bed & bobtail the back section

That's the same arrangement I'm using on my Chevy. Simple, yet still works great. What did you decide to use for joints?

Im going to use the two links I already have made with the flex joints. Thats why Im only running a y link on one side. If I ran two y links I would get some suspension bind do to the flex joints.

Yur like me, just takin yur time and doin things right n researchin the shit outta sumthin before ya decide ya wanna run it. I like the sliders. Thought about doin that but they ain't rusted out n banged up enuf yet for me to justify it. Give er aanother winte or 2 and I'll be right there withya. Just shoot for a next summer completion date or somethin, that's kinda what I'm fnding I keep havin to do, since it never gets any work done on it.

I havent had much time Im trying to get my motorcycle on the road and Ive been on the job hunt since january. If I get one of the two positions I interviewed for I will be renting a garage space to finish the truck in so Im not outside.

I did get my wheel spacers the other day though. they are 1.25" per side in the front. I need them for my tires to clear my lower links.

you may need to grind down the lugs with 1.25" spacers for the wheel to sit flush.

I'm gonna go ahead and say, you've spent 3 years so far, go find a 60 to put up front. It didn't take me 3 years, but the FIRST time out after i did my 44 SAS i broke a shaft, that was the shittiest part of that whole deal.

You are spending enough time to link it and do it "right". Get a 60 and be done. I know i'll never run anything else in anything i build again.

I had a 60 I sold it, I cant afford to build a 60 right now. I would have to get new tires, wheels, highsteer, regear. At this point its not worth it. Plus I think Im going to skip the 60 stage. Im going to finish my truck this year. Wheel it for 2 years then go rockwells. alot cheaper in the long run.

this appears to have door bars in it....in these cases you want to reinforce the opening on streeters because of that when going doorless as it is part of the cab support. and as you now know after working with them you can make it 10 times stronger and still allow max visibility, good for future learninz.

The door bars don't add anything to the cab EXCEPT in a side impact. not like the cab is a unibody.

Are you going to run an interior cage or exo?

Full interior cage, pretty extensive compared to most builds, it will resemble that of a desert truck and less of a regular trail truck. I want to build a cage once and know that it will hold up. There will be a tube bed also, that I plan on tieing into sliders and cage.

I made a heater box block off plate. I took the heat and AC off the truck and doing so left a huge hole in the firewall. I have a 4x8' sheet of 1/8" so I used some of that. It needs 2 more bolts on the far right, the other four are in existing spots.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v69/redranger4.0/DSC_0169.jpg

I removed the stock seat mount bracket that is spot welded to the floor. That left like 20 little holes I had to weld up.

The rain held off for today so I was able to deal with my transfer case clearance problem.

Started by cutting a nice big old hole in the floor.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v69/redranger4.0/DSC_0180.jpg

I then jacked the back of the trans up as much as possible with out hitting the rest of the trans tunnel. Im just shy of a flat belly on the truck. To get the extra inch I would need I would have to do some really major surgery on the trans tunnel which isnt really worth it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v69/redranger4.0/DSC_0181.jpg

Next I started patching the floor back up. I used the peices I cut out, just flipped them over. I ran out of gas for my welder at this point so tomorrow Im going to get a refill and if its not raining continue and if it is Im going to work on my half door.

I'd do the extra work to flat belly it. You've got it torn down already, and whats another 2 years to get a flat belly :thefinger:

I would need to cut out the whole trans tunnel. Its alot more work then I really want to do. My skid plate is going to be flat with two small bump outs for the tcase and doubler. They will only hang down about an inch and arent that big. It will be pretty much a flat belly.

Yea orginially I had less cut out from the door. But the more I looked at it I realized that if Im going to do it I might as well really make it a half door.

i'm curious to see how you hook up your fuel cell with the stock pump. I've been searching for a way to hook up my fuel via another tank/pump set up, but if i can keep my pump, (its fairly new anyways) and just get a fuel cell and drop it in, that would be great.

I got my Transmission crossmember all squared away. It needs to be finish welded as its only tacked together right now. This is about my 4th design or so. The problem came from the fact that Im trying to fit this crossmember, my upper link and my lower link mount in to about 6-8" of space. The bushing ends are 2" .25 wall DOM, the tubing is 2"x2" 3/16th wall square, the gussets are 3/16th plate. It should be very solid. I got rid of the stock trans mount so this mounts directly to the trans and the bushings act as the trans mount now.

It has sportster lowering shocks on the back. The bars are some leftover CR bend dirtbike bars I had laying around. The tank is a XJ750 tank, which is nice cause its about 1 gallon larger its bare metal with a some clear coat over it.

Like the bike. *IF* the right parts were available for cheap, I'd do the twin front discs. I added a second disc on my 81 XS650 many years ago and the whoa factor went up a LOT!

Love the trans xmember, and the half doors...

Solid Body mounts almost all cut out. My bandsaw blade finally let go just as it finished one. So I need to pick up another blade to cut the last two. I built in a 1/2" "body lift" into the pucks so it gives me a little bit more clearance around the trans/tcase.

My cage is going to be solid mounted to the frame. If you leave the body on rubber mounts the cage can contact the body. But if you solid mount both. they "move as one"

That's a good idea. The only thing I could think of, the cab is going to want to flex less than the frame. But I think that would be more of an issue with a daily/ street driven truck.

I love the build!! I wish I had done my half doors more like that. Mine are cut out a bit more.

I already have a IFS Toyota Steering box, but Im not sure if the rearward swing IFS box is going to work with my highsteer setup as the drag link may hit the tierod on compression. So I picked up a FJ60 box which is the same as a IFS box but has a 4th mounting hole and is a forward swing box. Ill hold on to both boxes untill I get there and see which I will use.
