break in?

Hey guys, i was wondering if there is a break in procedure for my 302, i haven;t started it since i rebuilt it, new rings, reused the cam and lifters though they were put in be the rubuild buy the previous owner. is there a special type of oil i should use? filter? also the carb needs to be adjusted and the distributer timed up, should i try to do this b4 hand?

there is a break in procedure for every engine. When i put my new 302 in it I changed the oil and filter adter the first 100 km, then 500 after that then 1000and then that was that. The idea is to flush the cointamination out of the oil. As far as driving it. I let mine idle till it warmed up, crused around a bit, found a side road and opend it up a few times to put a good load on the engine. Let it cool down a bit by juss takin it easy then did it again. After that I just drove it normaly and kept an eye on the engine temp and oil psi.

Really you should be pretty much fine you don't have a totally "new" engine. As for any first start after a rebuild it would be a good idea to prime the oil pump to make sure you have everything lubed and have oil pressure. From there as far a oil with a flat tappet cam I use Rotella 10W-40 since that was recommended on the sheet with the cam I installed. If its roller cam then any modern oil will be fine. At least for a new cam I have always let the engine run between 1800-2200 rpm with no load for about 15 min to allow break in as well as do some moderate tuning and last checks. From there you don't want any full throttle blasts for about 100 miles or so and really from there you should be just fine.

break ins are really for camshaft/lifter combos(flat tappet ones at that). Reusing them i'm assuming they are roller or else matched. Start that bad boy and smile. If you used assembly lube, keep the rpms low at first and change the oil after your first long start/drive. As for timing...you can't really get a good feel for timing or its curve until its started anyways, and carb adjustments will change with timing and how the engine wants fuel. I can guarantee you that any aftermarket carb which claims to be preadjusted will need adjustment unless you like wasting gas.
