shift knobs


looks kind of uncomfortable... :dntknw:

ive got one of those chrome skulls (for free) for a trans. shifter and a 1970-something 75CC honda piston (also free) for a t-case shifter:

I didnt want a skull or anything cause you see them too much in my opinion. I found that site looking for some of the crazy old school tiki and custom knobs. There are actually a fair number on there. I settled on rat fink cause I am a fan of ed roth.
 
Wicked, I'm curius how you got that piston to attach/ stay on the shifter?

Would the same method work for attaching one (a piston) to the transmission shifter as well?

The CNC guy at my work might make me a nice shift knob (hexagonal with the 1-5 and R on top), but if I could use a piston, it'd be just as cool, and save him the work. I work at a motocycle shop, so I'm sure my boss would have an old 50-100cc piston laying around.
 
i agree that the chrome skull knobs are way to common. its only on there because it was free and it added a little more pizaz that the stocker.

dogboy: attaching the piston is really technical. you turn it upside down, fill the bottom with jb weld stick (the stuff you kneed together to activate - it doesnt run while curing), then stuff the piston on the shift lever. done. its been like that for quite a number of years now and i havnt managed to break it off :icon_thumby:

I might have to attemp it... haha

I may just come up with a different way that would involve welding a piece of aluminum to the bottom, then, that way I could take it off it need be.

Eiether that, or the JB weld method comes next.
 
My old 75 F100 had a threaded t-case shift lever, so my buddy took an old piston about that size and welded a nut to the wristpin and that worked great. I don't think RBV shifters are threaded, but maybe you could run a tap on it?

Could I get anything for the AT column shiter?

I bet the overdrive is in the way.
 
the overdrive button is a problem...but you could relocate it to the dash if you really felt like it. the other problem is how small the auto trans. shift lever is...gonna be hard to find a knob with a small enough hole to fit on it.

im sure someone makes shifters for them though...just have to search around a bit.
 
Standard 8-ball on mine, with 8-ball door locks.
 
I got tired of mine always coming off, the parts store only had Ricer style knobs and Ford wanted $22 for a stocker. So I wraped the splines in electrical tape a few times and stuck a deep 12 point 16 MM socket on there, works for me.

Now Im thinking about using an old 302 Rod I have laying around as a clutch pedal.
 
come to think of it my damn shifter knob comes off all the time, im bout to kick its ass! im puttin shotgun shell on mine...i ordered a whole shifter off ebay for my old s-10 and i came lookin just like a chrome didlo >:(

Ahhhhhhhhhh....excellent idea...I was wondering how to get my blue knob to stick...it had an allen key bolt that I somehow lost or stripped...I stuck it on with another screw but he head sticks out and catches on my hand once in a while...might try that one myself...thanks for the idea...
