Didn't know where to post this, but my starter is acting up, dont want to have to buy a new one. It will turn my engine over a couple times and then quits catching, right now all I have to do is turn the key 2 times and I start. The engine troubleshooting section says pull it off and look at it.

What would I be able to do to fix it? Or is it possible to repair it?

what do you mean by quits catching? the starter motor still runs but the motor doesnt turn over? or does the starter just stop altogether?

Starter keeps turning but the motor stops turning over, You can hear it turning the motor over, then the motor quits turning and you can hear the starter wind up really loud.

you might be missing a tooth on your flywheel, my buddy had the same problem and found that to be the source

I would think the same thing if it wasn't for the fact that every once in a while my starter wont grip at all and just free spins until i hit it with my "starter wrench" AKA "tire iron" and after that it will grab.

It's likely just a bad starter drive, they're only about 6 bucks for the old style starter.

you could have a damaged ring gear or starter bendix, a bad solenoid, or otherwise damaged bendix lever.

you can still get new solenoids and bendix's seperately, but its becoming harder to find them.

Is there anything I can try doing to it w/o having to buy parts?

you could try disassembling it and cleaning/greasing everything up...but its not going to function reliably until you fix it properly. part of owning an automobile, especially if you want to 'wheel with it, is occasionally having to spend money to maintain it.

I fully agree with that, problem is I don't have the current funds to replace the starter. I was just trying to get it to where I can get by until I get the money to do it. I know if it really get's bad, at least I drive a manual and can push start it. I get paid in a week and will probably have the money then.

A junk yard will sell you one for much less than a new or remanned starter...I've only bought a new one once in eight years of Ranger ownership...

My starter actually died in the parking lot of the JY once...was an easy fix...and about ¼ the price of reman...

Oh, and if you can't afford the JY price then you may need to wait...I had to jump start mine more than enough times that I started parking on grades and made sure I backed into spots in case I had to push it out to jump start it...
