1992 Reg cab long bed. It is still just being mocked up. Everything still needs to be taken apart for blasting and powdercoating before I can begin on bodywork. It will primarily be a show truck, but might see a couple drag passes. I hope to have it completed ~2012.
Engine is a 1989 roller cam 5.0L. Trick Flow Track Heat heads, Trick Flow .542/.563 cam, 10.5:1 compression, gear drive timing set, RPm air gap intake, 670cfm Holley Street Avenger. Full MSD ignition with billet distributor, 6AL box, superconductor wires, and Blaster 3 coil. Swap components are all from Advance Adapters. Transmission is a C4 with 3000 stall JW converter and manual valvebody. Rear end still needs to be built, but will be a 8.8 w 3.55 gears, Detroit Locker, 31 spline Moser axles and c-clip eliminators. Steering converted to manual, still debating manual brakes.
Here's a few random pictures from so far.
This first picture is from the last day I drove it before totally dismantling. It will be much nicer the next time it moves.

Just curius, why you get rid of the power brakes and power steering? I don't see any benifit in that..
It's going to be a nice looking truck though, I like it.
snoopjonnyjon
09-28-2008, 11:43 PM
I am trying to save as much weight as I can, so ditching any power accessories helps. Removing the PS gives one less thing to potentially leak, and I won't have the wretched whine under the hood when its running. The brackets I had interfered the pump and the steering box, so I just decided to scrap it. Its a light truck anyways. The power brakes I am not sure about. I may or may not have enough vacuum to run with my cam, so then I'd need to run a vacuum canister adding another ugly item under the hood. I might try it and see if it works as is. It would save a lot of effort to just leave the brakes alone.
Oh yeah, I am switching the block lettering Ranger emblems to a set of NOS emblems for the bedside of a 67-69 F100 Ranger. This is just a crappy one I found a picture of, but I have an NOS set. I'll get this logo stiched into the floor mats too.

i have manual brakes on my ranger (think the guy i bought it from took the booster off as i found the vac lines with bolts in them) but anyhow it stops really well wit 33" tires on it and takes minimal effort to brake for no booster on it

Tell me those are advance adapter headers so i have a reason to complaine to them

emblem idea in the mats is really a great idea!
i wish you could use long tube headers with 4x4, shortys just do not have the sound when there un capped.
ive found a set of used long tube i may talk the guy out of just to whack them up and see if i can make them fit.
deff. gonna keep watching this build!

i could not see...but is that still a gen two rad suport or you giving it the much better gen 1 look :)
snoopjonnyjon
09-29-2008, 10:09 PM
That is still a Gen 2 core support. The front end is the one area of the truck that I don't have a clear vision of how I want to do it. The back end is simple: Early Bronco taillights, and sectioning the block FORD lettering out from the tailgate and welding in a section of Ford script from a 40's tailgate I have around. Should give a near stock, but WTF look to the back.
Unless I can come up with a better idea for the front end, that I am actually capable of executing to a high level, I am going to just do a stock restore on the front. I am not a bodyman.

The fact that mine dont fit worth a damn, the collector sits partway under the transmission oil pan instead of running along the side of the transmission, and im just not happy with them at all...
snoopjonnyjon
10-01-2008, 11:39 PM
Mine didn't exactly drop in either. I had to notch the framerail, and the bellhousing, and run a mini starter on the passenger side. Driver's side fit nice. Were you using a 157 or 164 tooth bellhousing? They took some effort, but that's to be expected on anything custom.
dude772
10-02-2008, 11:18 PM
no i had no problems with fitting them to the engine, i expected to notch the frame a little, i cut a couple ears off the bellhousing that looked like they were for supporting the transmission for production and storage. but the header shouldn't protrude downward under the frame and under the transmission oil pan.

No update pictures since my camera clapped out, but I've been busy.
The frame, cab and box are all disassembled, ready for sand/soda blasting, hopefully in the next couple weeks. There is no longer any part that can't be carried by two guys! I'll very soon be done messing with any rusty junk and just be dealing with clean painted parts :yahoo:
The rear end build is also underway. I have a 92 8.8 rear with 31 spline Detroit Truetrac, Moser custom alloy axles, c-clip eliminators, 3.73 gears, and Competition Engineering Slide-A-Link traction bars.
snoopjonnyjon
11-24-2008, 08:49 AM
Well, it is totally disassembled. Not a single fastener of any kind on the frame, cab or box. I'll be taking the frame to be blasted, and the cab and box into the body shop as soon as I have a chance. It's all loaded up on the trailer.
Cab off, box still on.

I just don't think it could be done with a 92 frontend honestly.
Are you lowering the truck at all?
snoopjonnyjon
12-01-2008, 07:30 PM
No, not lowered at all, I'll see how it sits when its done. Might raise it a little in front. I'm planning to run tall 60's style piecrust cheater slicks and narrow bias plies in front for a vintage gasser look.

It doesn't pass current tech standards, and I didn't feel like changing it so that it would. I've only run it on the roads out at the farm and the old airstrip here. I don't want to bench race and estimate an ET, but it feels stronger than my ZX6 Ninja, Buell Cyclone 1200, or Triumph Super III Daytona.
It is super lightweight (never had on a scale, but I can lift both wheels off the ground by grabbing the backbone with one hand with the tank off. And stock made about 30rwhp. Since it won't run on anything even resembling a street fuel, I suspect its' had some work done. It feels stronger than any other 250 I've been around.

If i could lead you in the right way on some bedsides, www.lmctruck.com sells replacement bedsides for your truck.
snoopjonnyjon
12-02-2008, 11:18 PM
LMC only sells drivers side bedsides, for some odd reason. Fortunately I was able to find one remaining Ford passenger side searching through dealers with discontinued inventory. Unfortunately, they are in Ohio, and I am in Canada, and they will not ship to Canada. So, I am getting it sent to a coworker in Iowa, who is in turn shipping it to me. I'll be lucky to see it before spring.

snoopjonnyjon
12-16-2008, 01:31 PM
Bought it on sale for $1299 CDN. I figured that was a good deal for a made-in-USA 2 stage compressor rated for 50,000 hours at 100% duty cycle.
Thats definitely a quality previous repair on that cab corner! LOL.
Did you have any rust behind your dash like I did?
snoopjonnyjon
12-16-2008, 06:48 PM
Yeah, there was some in the corner of the windshield behind the dash. All fixed now though.
snoopjonnyjon
01-05-2009, 01:01 PM
New cab corner is in, so the cab is now officially rust free. The box can now start getting the attention. Who would have thought bedsides would be so hard to get? Cost me way over $1000 to get the passenger one, and I am still trying to get the drivers side.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/rangerframe003.jpg
I ended up painting the frame, rear end, front i beams, etc myself with epoxy primer and urethane paint. That urethane paint definately shortened my lifespan. I was watching TV later in the holidays and found out it requires a fresh air supply, even a respirator isn't enough. I had a dust mask, and then a long term headache. At least it came out looking great.

I would have bought a respirator if I could have. I painted it on Christmas day, so any place that would sell that kinda stuff was closed. I mixed up my 2 part paint and noticed it was pretty stinky. I checked and the pot life was only 8 hrs, so I had no choice but to either spray it, or waste it. Since it was about $200 worth of paint, I decided to spray it.

Everything is pretty self explanatory, except for maybe the pictures of the shaved drip rails. You wouldn't notice them if you weren't told. It ended up giving kind of a neat body line. The pearl doesn't show up in the pictures nearly as much as in person, although you can see it a bit in the 2nd and 3rd pics by the door latch area.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I haven't touched this project since winter. I don't have the time for it in the summer, so it just has to wait. I've already got 3 winters on it, and have a ways to go!
I would like to get the rear end assembled (8.8 w/ 3.73 gears, Detroit True-trac, 31 spline Moser axles, c-clip eliminators), so that I can fit the Slide-a-link traction bars, and get a custom driveshaft. I'd like to get the ball rolling on those longer lead time items so I don't have to wait on anything next winter. I wouldn't mind ordering shocks too, just can't decide if I want to go with an all-around shock, or 90/10 drag shocks.

Well, it's the time of year for some progress again. The rear is actually already under the truck, again, just forgot to take a picture of it on all 4 wheels again.

All that work to the truck and your not going rear disk??
It's easy enough to change in the future, if that is his plan. I went with the drummies on my ranger's 9" since it's 11" in diameter, much bigger than stock, plus it stops as much as it needs to.
Love the build, love the details. You are truly a guy who knows what he wants. Keep up the good work!! It'll pay off soon!

When the truck was stock, I could lift the rear wheels under hard braking, so the rear brakes really didn't need to do ANYTHING. I'm not the least bit concerned about them being inadequate. I won't be running a power booster, or power steering either.... all manual. Main reason I stuck with the drums though is that I just happen to prefer the appearance. If I had the ambition, I would have figured out a way to put finned Buick drums on all 4 corners:icon_rofl:.

Those 14 inch Supremes with 5.20 rubber are off my lowrider, and the 22's are off my 08 Grand Marquis... neither will spend much time on this truck. I just put them on for fun, because I had just pulled them off for winter.
The plan is to run big and little as-cast unpolished Torq Thrusts (or other vintage mag) with pie crust cheater slicks in the back. Kinda like the look of the Radir flag cheater slicks.

I'm hoping to have it done sometime in 2012 or 2013... it won't be done for a while.
I won't be running the big rims very often. I bought them for my Marquis and really like them on that car. They look a little too donkish on the truck, but I'll probably run them once in a while. I also have a set of 17 inch Mach1 rims that have very few miles on them that look good on the truck too. They looked kinda neat on the Marquis as well, but I do prefer the 22s on that car. I like a wide variety of rims, and it is handy that most of my vehicles take the same bolt pattern. I think I have 5-6 sets of aftermarket rims that fit this truck. Absolutely love Ford for that.

I made a little progress on the truck this weekend. I mounted my driveshaft, which is the original driveshaft shortened 1.25", straightened and balanced with new u-joints. I also mounted the rear sway bar, which is stock with Energy polyurethane bushings, and finished the install of the Comp Engineering traction bars.
I also mounted the remote oil filter. I attached it to the driver's side core support body mount. I figured it came out pretty clean looking.

It was a Ranger Sport, maybe that's why it had a sway bar? I just assumed they all would have. It is one butt ugly sway bar. It looks like a guy bent it by hand over his knee and then bolted it up.
I'm not sure I'm crazy about the gold anymore either. I loved it on the engine, calipers and drums, but if I had it to do again, I'd probably do the springs and steering box black. BUT, those parts might not even be used anyways. I'll see how the hide height looks once the truck is done, and if I don't like it, then I'll be getting new springs anyways. I don't find them THAT offensive either, not enough so that I feel like tearing everything apart again. I have so much moving forward to do, I hate going backwards.
Last night I picked up another armful of new parts to put on. Driveshaft loop, 90/10 drag shocks, ignition coil, Lokar throttle pedal / cable and shifter boot, and a set of Ford Racing guages. I have the matching tach as well, just not pictured.

Figured out where to mount the coil. I was able to use existing accessory holes in the cylinder heads. I got lucky and the coil wire is the right length to reach the dizzy. I also finally bought the right length belt for my abbreviated front accessories. I ditched the air pump, a/c compressor, and power steering. Emissions control and interior comfort be damned!

This will be the last update before the new year. Hopefully, I'll have some serious progress to show then.
This week, for some reason, I forgot to take any pictures of what I spent most of the time working on... which was getting the seat to fit.
The seat had been in my computer room here in the city for almost 4 years. I figured it was going to drop right into the truck, since it came out of an 83-88 Ranger.
WRONG, apparently the floor pans are different on 83-88 vs 89-92 despite the cabs appearing to be the same. I set the seat in, and the rear mounts were about 2 inches out, while the fronts were about 30 degrees wrong angle, and 3 inches narrower. So, not even close.
The rear was easy enough to deal with, just drill new holes in the floors. Luckily, it avoided any of the under-floor braces. In the front, I cut off the front part of the seat track, and made a bolt on piece to adapt to the original threaded holes in the floor. Once the carpet is in, they'll not be noticeable. After that, the seat fit well. It really tucked in to the cab nicely.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/102_0025.jpg
The seat back looked like ass, all faded and chipped so I dealt with that as well. I redid the seat back, and attached it with new clips.

This seemed like a fun time to install the headliner, so it went in with the visors.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/102_0034.jpg
After playing around with the interior parts, I put the rear shocks on. I put on KYB's just because they are silver and match the appearance of my drag shocks up front. Yes, I am that lame. "I like the color". I figured they must be decent, my KX500 has all KYB suspension. That reminds me, I need to change fork seals on that bike. Uh oh.

I then took apart my steering column to fix a rattle and an on-center dead spot in it. Again, forgot to take pictures of any of that, but was successful.
Then, I modified my pedal assembly to get rid of the clutch pedal, and mounted the pedals, steering column and shifter back in the truck. The purpose of all this is so that I can locate where to mount my throttle pedal. EVERYTHING is coming out again, as the cab is again being separated from the chassis over christmas. Sitting in the truck I was very happy with how well I fit in it. The steering column is non-tilt (trying to save weight), and the bench seat has no adjustment for anything other than front-back. I have a quick-detach on the steering wheel, but it isn't even needed. With the seat all the way back it just feels great. And the shifter is just in the ideal spot, and clears the seat perfectly with the double bend. It's almost like I've been planning this stuff out. And I got lucky.

Plans for christmas are to finish the rear brakes, both hydraulic and park brake portions. Plumb the fuel system, as long as the braided line and AN fittings show up on time. I just ordered those last Thursday. Make a gauge cluster to mount the gauges shown in previous posts into the stock dash. Make aluminum filler panel to fill the hole in the floor around the shifter. Replace intake manifold gaskets and header gaskets with ones with large enough ports to match the heads and intake (current gasket is smaller than heads or intake). Machine valve covers to accept bolt on breather. Find suitable mounting location for MSD 6-AL box. Find lower rad hose with proper bend. Mount gauge senders in engine, and plug all other water and oil gallery plugs. Mount Lokar throttle pedal and cable. By that point, I should be ready to prime up the oil pump and fire the engine. I doubt I'll get that all done over Christmas, but it's the goal I'll be working towards.

snoopjonnyjon
12-17-2009, 11:17 PM
The headlight could fool a guy to thinking it's a KDX, but it's actually a 1993 KLX650R. This was Kawi's attempt at an open-class 4 stroke Baja 1000 type bike. Not street legal, kickstart only, no battery, etc. Only sold them in North America for 3 years, very poor sales. Depending on available traction, it has beaten the kx500 in drag races, so it isn't a slouch. It's at least 60lbs heavier though, which makes jumping a chore. The geometry is really stable though and feels great at triple digit speeds. Far better than the KX500 for that. The suspension is quite a bit softer, and isn't great for jumping. It might just be the extra weight though, as it is sharing the same inverted fork with the kx500. If I remember right the KDX always kept the conventional fork. They're actually a pretty good matched pair for riding together. BUT, this bike will burn $10 in premium pump gas in a day, while the KX500 has no trouble going through $150 of VP. That's usually how I determine which I'll ride. If I am going with slower riders, no sense wasting money on riding the KX when the KLX will do, but if the riders are fast, then I'll have some fun with the KX.

These bikes are good for big, open, fast trails. A kdx200/kdx220 and klx300r would be better for tight trails. Luckily bikes are small and easier to store than cars, so a fella can have lots.

I stand corrected haha. Very nice bikes though. I got my KDX for free off my cousin, its a little beat and the front fender is faded, really needs sprockets and chain and a rebuilt mono shock, other than that it runs awesome and goes like hell. Don't know what kind it is but it has an after market silencer on it too so it's nice and loud. Ah hell, here's a picture. Bout as good as it's gunna get from a shitty cell phone.

It actually doesn't look all that much different than it did two weeks ago, but there has actually been a lot of work done. There were a lot of things just mocked up before, that are actually installed now.
Here's a shot of the picture window in the garage on Christmas eve morning. That was a cold night! I parked my snow covered F150 inside which melted off and really got the humidity up. I figured it looked kinda pretty.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger001-1.jpg
First plan of attack was to get the rear brakes finished up completely. First step was to run the e-brake cables, and then I could install the brakes. I've done a lot of drum brakes before, but this was the first time using all new parts. Almost seemed like a shame to cover up all the shiny multicolored bits with drums.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger002-1.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger003-1.jpg
Then I ran the hydraulic lines for the brakes. Like everything else in this project it seems, the stock ones did not fit. The traction bars totally got in the way. I was able to bend up some lines though... just killed time.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger007-1.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger008-1.jpg
Next I did the throttle cable and pedal. And mounted the valve cover breather.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger004-1.jpg
And made an aluminum plate to mount the MSD box.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger005-1.jpg
While into fabbing aluminum, I made the surround for the shifter, and mounted the shifter boot. This also took way longer than I expected. You can see the throttle pedal here as well.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger006-1.jpg
And then... I took the cab off again. I pulled off the intake manifold to replace the gaskets, since I needed to use gaskets with larger ports tp match the heads and intake. I also primed the oil pump, running it up to about 45psi oil pressure on the gauge. I figured I should turn the motor over by hand while oiling, just to make sure it oils all the way around the journals. So, I pulled out the plugs to find that the domed pistons interfere heavily with the spark plugs. I guess I'll need to run short reach plugs.
Water temp sender was easy to mount, it actually came with all the adapters I needed.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger013-1.jpg
Oil pressure sender was a PITA. Spend about a day finding all the little fittings, elbows and adapters I needed to get this thing mounted. I finally settled on 1/4NPT brass union, 1/4NPT 45 degree elbow, which I had to massage to clear the block to install, then a 1/8NPT adapter and short pipe into the sender.

I also did a final install of headers with gaskets at this point, as well as buttoned up the valve covers, with gaskets this time too. For once the engine was actually together, not just sitting there looking like an engine.
Then I did the fuel system. I was stunned how quick and easy braided hose makes the job. I did the whole thing in one evening.

I also did the electronic speedometer sender, and transmission cooler lines while I had the cab off, but neglected to snap any photos. And I ran the brake hardlines back to the master cylinder.
So, on went the cab, for hopefully the final time. I actually used the bolts and body mounts this time, so I am hoping it is here to stay.
Here is the rear mount. These were able to reuse the stock hardware. It is a Energy Suspension kit, intended for 83-88 Rangers. I have a 1992, which they do not make it for, and is slightly different, so I had to improvise for the core support mounts.

Here's the front mount, using some improvised hardware. It came out nice and solid.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger017-1.jpg
And here's the truck swung back into it's resting place. Looking pretty much the same to the untrained eye. It's actually much much close to being running and driving though. I see no reason I can't put in the radiator, trans dipstick, and do some makeshift wiring and drive this thing around in this level of completion. I hope to be doing so by spring. Oh yeah, to please the big rim haters, I reinstalled my Mach1 wheels.

There's still another 1000lbs+ of parts to go back on. I am sure that will settle the suspension some. But, lowering the truck is cheap and easy once it is built. I'll deal with getting the ride height where I want it after it is built.

It's coming along great! The only thing I would have done different would be the oil lines. I used the ones that came with my adapter until the engine came back out. I had NAPA make some hydraulic lines to replace them.

I've actually got an update!
First off, I will explain what a doofus I am. I didn't know a SBF needed a block plate. It wasn't until I was searching to a bellhousing dust cover that I discovered they even existed. This block plate ended up uncovering a whole bunch of stuff that I am very glad I caught.
When I bought the transmission, it had a 157T bellhousing, but it was cracked. The transmission shop said they had another one, so when the transmission was built they stuck it on. At that time, I was not fully trained in what exactly was different between a 157T and 164T. Unfortunately, I had been sold a 164T and didn't know it. My torque and flexplate were bought for a 157. There's actually two differences. The start location is slightly more outboard, but worse is that the bellhousing depth is 3/8in deeper. So when I tightened my converter bolts, it was actually pulling the converter out of the transmission. Thank goodness I never tried to fire this thing, or who knows what damage would have happened.
So, I was on the hunt for a new bellhousing... discovered on boxing day. I knew from the first time I looked, that these are a pain to find, so I just wanted to buy new. I ended up ordering a JW Ultra Bell from Jeg's. I figured I would never get it in the week between Christmas and New Years, but I had it in my hands 2 days after ordering. And this is being delivered to Assiniboia. Within 11hrs of ordering it had went from Columbus, Ohio to Calgary. I was pretty impressed with the service.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0005-3.jpg
Here is the two bellhousings together.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0003-3.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0004-2.jpg
After getting it, I had it back together in no time at all.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0010-2.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0013-2.jpg
The bellhousing moved the starter location though, so I ended up having to re-clock the mini-starter to clear my headers. It's tight, and I now have terrible access to the terminals on the starter, but... whatever.

While I had easy access, I also mounted the Dakota Digital gear indicator sender. It was just generic universal stuff, so it took a little bit of time to get it working right with my Lokar shifter, but it came out nice. The sender itself is on a little bent aluminum bracket bolted to the servo cover, with a linkage going to the shifter. Apparently it needs about 1/3 of its range of motion for the computer to calibrate properly, and I am using over 1/2 so it ought to work. I haven't gone through the programming ritual for it yet.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0011-2.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0012-2.jpg
This is a little backwards chronologically, because I worked on this while I was waiting for the bellhousing. I had been trying to figure out how to do the guages since the beginning of the project, and just didn't know what route to take. I actually had a couple different attempts that didn't turn out how I liked. I actually wrecked 2 dashes trying things. Luckily Ranger parts are cheap and easy to find at wreckers! I finally did something I was happy with here. I removed the clear plastic from the stock cluster, removed the guages, gutted the whole thing so that there was room for a 3/16 aluminum plate between the main housing and the curved bezel, and then cut the aluminum down to size. It now bolts in exactly like a set of factory guages, and the contour fits the dash properly. I polished the plate before cutting the holes for the guages. I'm 50/50 whether I like the polished or not. I still might do it engine turned.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0006-2.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0009-2.jpg
The downside to having the guages sunken into the stock location is that I didn't have enough room for all the guages. If I had the gauges mounted out flush with the dash like I had initially tried, I could put them all in one cluster, but it looked like shit. So, I decided to lose the radio. I may or may not add something in glovebox, but I'm not sure if I would miss tunes in this truck anyways. I've got other vehicles for that.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0007-1.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0008-2.jpg
I'm now jumping back to having the transmission installed, and the cab back on the chassis. I figured I would see how the gauges look inside the truck. The main dash still needs work, so don't think it is staying that color. I still need to tear it all apart. I might go two-tone white and blue on it.

The dash was really just for killing time. With the transmission back together, I could work towards making it run.
I needed to do the transmission dipstick, and for that I needed to finish the heater box, because that's where I intended to mount to. I guess I should have snapped some pictures along the way. A couple years ago I cut the corner out for valve cover clearance, but it was still kinda ugly. I spent an evening with some bondo and plastic dye making it look presentable, and detailed the fan. I installed all the ductwork inside the cab, along with a new heater core as well. Cleaning the in-cab stuff was nasty. Even though it is hidden, I wanted it clean. You could eat off the inside of the ducts/ heater box now.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0024-3.jpg
Here's some "before" pics.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0519.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0528.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0527.jpg
To finish with transmission stuff, I mounted the transmission cooler. which also required doing the radiator and electric fan.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0023-2.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0025-2.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/100_0026-2.jpg
And that's about where she sits now. To make it run I still need to: time the distributor roughly, connect heater hoses, find suitable lower rad hose, and then just roughly wire the ignition, starter, and electric fuel pump. I want to make sure everything is right mechanically before putting much more together.

to fix your radio problem, run an iPod straight to the amp, then amp to speakers.. no head unit neccasary, and you can hid the iPod in the glove box.

you could hide everything, and just need an ipod, amp, speaker.
oh and that LOD cable even charges your iPod, got a couple of jeepers locally that i think are gonna run it this way so they don't have to worry about a headunit.

Quite an uneventful first fire up really. The only leak was the front float bowl. No bad noises out of anything. I just need to get a timing light, because that was just based on my best guess sticking the dizzy in the hole. Something's a little funny with the idle speed, too. I could not get it to drop.:icon_confused:

I bought a MSD timing light because the chinese timing light I was using seemed to be bouncing around a bit. It seems to run nice now, but I haven't put it in gear yet. I actually could drive it now as it sits, once I bleed the brakes and add some gear lube to the rearend. I want to get another couple weekends of work done on this truck before spring comes. The last month I've just been focusing on getting some motorcycles ready for spring too. I think I am the only person that complains about winter being too short!
Here's another video of it running. I was hoping the Gopro wouldn't distort as bad, but even it had troubles.

The box is in at the body shop now. I would love if I could get that in place this winter. It would make such a huge difference to making the truck, look like a truck.

I'm sorry to disappoint, but I didn't even take one good picture this break. All cellphone rubbish.
Got my new front bumper on. After months of trying, ordering, discovering they are on back order, and finally being told discontinued... I gave up on getting the correct M12 bumper bolts. The 1/2in bolts were a close enough press fit that they didn't pucker the area around, that was my main concern.

The alternator I had on it was an earlier style. It didn't plug into the stock Ranger wiring, so I did some researching and found that the alternator for a 94-95 5.0 Mustang fits the Ranger wiring, and the Crown Vic front accessory mounts I am using. Turns out it was only partially true. The large case 3G alternator was too big to pivot properly, so I had to do some clearancing on the bracket, but a couple hours work and I had it working. Changing alternator is a bitch on this thing. If you look closely, the bottom alternator pivot bolt is very long, and threads into the cylinder head. Now look at the distance to the radiator. Not coming out! I have to pull off a bunch of other junk with it.

I picked up the box just a few days ago. I wanted to wire the back end of the truck before I installed the box. But before I could plug in and clamp the harness, I needed to know where the main connector plugged in, so I rewired the underhood area to the firewall plug. Hardly picture worthy to see a wiring harness, but I did use all new loom, and clamp it in the factory locations, using the metal insulated clamps from PA.

With the box in place I moved to the interior. The carpet went in easier than I expected. Somewhere in there I wired the under carpet area. That had the courtesy light switches, courtesy light, cargo lamp, and rear speakers in it, I eliminated the seat belt alarm, and power seat circuits.

Thanks, I'm really excited with the progress. The build is going on 6 years, so I'm really happy to see the end in sight. Still a lot left, but what a change to see the box on.
I don't think I mentioned the suble modifications to the box. Both boxsides are new. The fuel door and stake pocket holes are shaved, and the the F O R D block lettering on the tailgate were replaced with a Ford script from a 1940 Ford tailgate.

I finally got to the stage where I could hook up the battery terminals and see what worked. Initially the truck wouldn't crank, but I traced that down to the clutch switch, which is long since gone. I just had to jump two wires together. It cranks, and I have ignition. I kinda have fuel pump, but it occurred to me on the drive home last night that it can't be right. I was all excited that the fuel pump ran for a few seconds when the key was on, and then shut off... just like a stock vehicle. I only fired the truck up for a few seconds to know ignition was working, so I thought everything was good. I retained the ECM hoping that it would operate the fuel pump even without the other sensors. Last night I got thinking that on my set up the pump shouldn't be cutting out. So next time I am home I will have to do something different there. I will likely have to just run key-on power to the fuel pump relay. If anyone has suggestions of the best way to do this, I'm open to suggestions. I know there's a few ways to skin the cat.
Most everything else works. Horn, heater fan, lights, open-door buzzer, washer pump. The only chassis electrical thing I have found that doesn't work is the wiper motor, but the delay box in the interior is clicking. I just ran out of time to track it all down yesterday.

I think I finished all the work I will be getting done on the truck this winter. My plan is to roll it into the bodyshop, and get the final bodywork and paint done over summer so that I can work on it again next winter, and have it completely finished for spring 2013.
The first thing I did this weekend was get the fuel pump relay working. I just needed to hook one wire to ground, as it otherwise grounded through the computer.
I also made up the cable running from the alternator to the solenoid on the fender. The old V6 had the alt on the passenger side of the engine, and the V8 is on the driver's side so I needed a much longer cable. The charging system still didn't work, but after some staring at wiring diagrams I realized that not having the voltmeter and idiot light connected was the cause. I shorted the grey/yel wire to the green/red which made it work.
Next I started tracking down all the wires needed to make the new guages work. The high beam indicator didn't seem to be reacting to the test light. I had high beam, but no indicator. More time looking at wiring diagrams and I realized the high beam indicator needs the daylight running lights module to work. So I cleaned that up, painted it, and got that working. I also have functioning daytime running lights now, not that I really cared one way or the other.
Turn indicators, oil pressure, temp, fuel level gauges, as well as the guage dimming circuits were all simple to identify with a multimeter. The truck already had wiring for an electric speedo output for the computer, so I added a different connector for my Autometer sender, and used the stock wiring to under the hood. On the inner fender the connector sends these to the computer, but I pulled the two pins out and rerouted to wires that will end up in the dash area. When I get the truck back from paint I should have very minimal wiring left to do getting the guages working as all wires have already been identified and marked. I will need to program the Dakota Digital gear indicator, but it appears to be relatively simple.

I was just wondering, you typed earlier in the build thread that you was sort of going for the old Gasser look, have you considered using the front axle out of a two wheel drive jeep and leaf springs???
I'm in the hunt for one for my 88 Ranger, there is no beneficial upgrades to using one, I my self don't much care for the twin I-beam when trying to lower one, and using a airbag setup, I don't care for the way the tires lean in when lowered.
any way your truck looks great, and good job. also have you considered using a metal flake blue on the dash to match the other blue on your interior?

I ended up not messing around with ride height at all yet. The front end has stock springs, with 90/10 drag shocks. The dash actually is a metallic blue, and matches decent in person. I hate to be making the excuse of looking better in person than in pictures, but it does look nice in person.
But... here's some updates!

Thanks for confirming a few things for me. First, that the Mach 1 wheels would look great on a square body Ranger (first gen, in my case). Second, that those mirrors would look perfect as well.
I have a set of Mach 1s that I bought months ago sitting in the yard, but my 86 is no where near ready for them yet. If you don't mind my asking what size rubber are you running? I checked the LMC truck catalog and those mirrors appear to be identical to the chrome ones that they sell as replacements for the 83-92 Rangers. I was planning to get them instead of the black flag style, now I know that I will.
Truck looks and sounds great by the way. I find it funny you have the newer truck and are going for the older style, I have the older truck and am going for newer style. Just hope mine sounds and looks as good some day, got along way to go before that happens though.

09-19-2012, 11:21 AM
No rush, I'm in the same boat. Bought the wheels with tires off another Ranger owner, and not exactly sure how they will fit. I know two of them need replacing cause they are to narrow for my taste, the other two may have to go as well. Two have a 225 and while that size looked great on a 6" wide Ranger wheel it's too narrow for these. The others are better with 235s, but may have too tall of a sidewall (I'm doing drop at same time as rebuild). They are almost to narrow for my taste as well, I think a 245 tire would be great as a minimum width for these wheels. While I'm on the subject of the wheels, did you use spacers?
I also meant to ask in my last post, where did you get the seat belts? I'm trying to decide between replacing mine or having them refurbished.
snoopjonnyjon
09-19-2012, 11:43 AM
I used spacers in the front to clear the centercap from the dust cap of the hub. I don't know thickness, as they came with the wheels. He had them on a 79 Fairmont Futura.
I might get some deeper spacers for the rear, just to bring the wheels out closer to flush. They tuck inside the fenders a lot. I might just buy some deeper wheels too. It doesn't have enough rear rubber. I really would like to have a set of slicks and front runners on appropriate wheels. Maybe Welds with Hoosiers. I just don't know what size of rear rubber would fit. Ranger drag trucks aren't quite as well documented as Fox body Stangs... haha

09-19-2012, 12:35 PM
Oh, and the seatbelts are from Autoloc.
JoshT
09-19-2012, 04:47 PM
I think that's probably the only thing I hate about these Mach 1 wheels. For a little while after they came out everybody made deep dish and wider aftermarket versions of it. Suddenly all sources dried up for them, I think one company still offers them according to the site. Other than that company you have to find someone that is getting rid of a set.
Personally I think I'm going to find a set of 06+ Crown Vic PI steel wheels to use for "racing tires." Not interested in drag racing, I'd rather try to run road course/autocross type events, so wide tire all round is preferred. If they aren't wide enough steel wheels can be made wider fairly easily, and I think I know of atleast one shop in the area that can do it.
Checked out the Autoloc website, but I think I'll probably have mine rebuilt. IIRC the quote I got in the past was about the same price.
I got to stop looking at your thread, it makes me want to drive mine too much. Yours looks great now, can't wait to see it finished.
snoopjonnyjon
09-19-2012, 05:55 PM
I wouldn't run 2006+ Crown Vic wheels. The offset is wrong. You'll need serious thick spacers. Maybe stock width would work because they are narrow. I have some 22x9 wheels that I special ordered for my 2008 Grand Marquis. They are a little wider than stock but all to the inside, with the outside lip is in the stock location. I tried them on my Ranger for fun, and the inside of the rim would scrub hard into the tie rod at anything approaching full lock.
JoshT
09-19-2012, 07:40 PM
I was thinking about those because they are the only Ford OEM steel wheels (AKA cheap and plentiful) I know of in 17" with the right bolt pattern. I'd look at other sizes but I have to have at least a 17 to clear the brakes I'm going to run in front and don't want to go larger.

It's been 6 years since I built my engine, and I still haven't stepped on the throttle. All I've done is idle around, because I am several miles from pavement. You have no idea how hard that has been. Next summer this thing is finally going to make a proper roast.

It needs to be finished for easter weekend next spring for the indoor car show! I actually hope to have it done at Christmas. I don't think this Ranger will go through many iterations, I think when it's done it will be done, with the exception of wheel/tire changes. I would love to put a 4 Weber carb intake on it too, but I doubt I'll ever find the money for that.
I've already got the next project in queue and am very anxious to make some progress on it, too. The motor is already built for it, and it should be a monster.

Did you get the weather stripping from LMC as well? I ordered some from JC Whitney many years ago and they didn't have formed part at the front lower corner of the glass, these appear to have it. I think that was a big part of the reason I always had trouble with it staying in place.

I got them from Rock Auto. They didn't come with the goofy formed piece at the front bottom corner. I cleaned up my old ones and reinstalled those.

So much for that idea, mine are were too rough to clean up. That is if they are even still there, may have thrown them out when I tore the truck down. I've seen a set on Bronco Graveyard that appear to have that formed piece on them, but that could be a stock photo so who knows. I'll probably order from there and see what I get.

That should be an easy enough piece to find at a junkyard. It's a formed semi-hard plastic that shouldn't really deteriorate that much. Don't even need any tools to remove it.

They deteriorated pretty good on my 84, but it had a hard life outside and little care before I got it. I'll have to find the weather stripping on the 86 they might still be in good enough shape to re-use. Problem with junkyards is that none around here have anything in the way of Rangers older than 95. They crushed everything older a year or two ago, and the couple of square bodies left were picked clean at least 5 years ago. Some day when I don't have so much going on I'm going to try to get up with multiranger and do a little yard hopping up his way, just don't know when that day might get here.

Must be nice. I couldn't even think about putting my bike in the back of a Ranger, it wouldn't fit. That's probably why it stays home when I go on trips (and almost any where else). I think I'm going to build a trike to replace it, build one with a bed so I'll be able to take the bike and won't need the truck. I admit that the bed may be a bad idea, but I do have a 2.8L that I need to find a home for and a trike is one consideration.

I have to leave the tailgate level to carry the harley...
the electric winch at the front pulls the bike in nicely.....
I also have adjustable air shocks on the truck to level it out once it's loaded.
I'm thinking about putting a trike rear end on mine too...
but NOT with a V-6 in front of it ;missingteeth;

Considering that my bike just barely fits on an 8' long trailer I don't think leaving the tailgate down on my short bed Rangers would do any good.
I would use a V8 but I don't have a spare and this motor is just sitting there waiting for a home. The other thought is to connect it to a mid engine transaxle and build dune buggy around it. Build something in the style of the military Chenowth buggies. I need to do something with it the motor was a fresh rebuild when I totaled the truck and its too good of a motor to get rid of. Got a while to think on it though, nothing will be happening with it soon.

You may have posted this before, but what color is that blue. The Ranger I am rebuilding will be blue as the primary color, and I'd like to add that to my list as a possibility. I'd go with a finer metal flake, but the shade is great. Currently Kona blue on the newer Mustangs is at the top of the list, but I'm keeping my options open.

This plane has a .46FX OS engine on it. It's a Sig LT-40 I built several years ago, but just learned to fly this fall. I've only flown this plane once, but have flown my others a lot. Most are electric foamies, and then the Ultimate Biplane I am building. It will have a .72 four stroke.

The Ford isn't bare metal, it is done in silver leaf. So that explains why you didn't see it before... it was just done this week!
I don't know what the blue is. It was just mixed up custom to as close as he could get to match the steering wheel.

Once it was on the truck I noticed and looked back at the other pics again. Technically speaking silver leaf is bare metal. Silver is metal, and you put nothing more than a clear coat over it. I know what you mean though, I just assumed the letters were masked or the paint was removed before clearing. That is cool, I need to go check out a youtube on doing silver/gold leaf. I've always liked the look but never really understood how it worked.
I don't know what the blue is. It was just mixed up custom to as close as he could get to match the steering wheel.
That's cool, just figured I'd ask. Sometimes that's how the best colors are made, by just mixing paint until it's right. Unfortunately that also makes them hard to duplicate if needed in the future. That's the reason I want to stick with more of a production color.

Basically just paint the area you want the silver to stick to with glue, and when it gets tacky, lay the thin sheet of silver over it, and use a small brush to wipe the excess silver off. Then he took and electric drill with a wool pad to create the brushed look, and then brushed some clear over it all.

Well, truck is basically finished now. All I have left is the exhaust, headlight knob and speedometer driven gear. I was previously unaware the manual and auto trans take a different gear.
Most of the work was in installing the Dakota digital indicator. It shows what gear I am in, as well as controlling the neutral safety switch, and reverse lights. It also has high beam indicator and turn signal indicators. I figured it is a pretty clean way to go when swapping trans and gauges.

You just got me to thinking about one issue which has bugged me about my build from the start... Indicators! I'm doing the Explorer V8 swap keeping most of the Explorer's wiring and electronics, but I'm keeping the 86's dash. I am also planning to replace the speedometer with something that reads in excess of 100 MPH. That leaves me needing a solution to put almost all of the Explorer's indicators in the ranger dash and relocate the high beam indicator. I didn't realize what all Dakota offered, I though they were mostly retrofits. Upon looking at their site they have a full aftermarket gauge set that I may be able to mount in the original locations behind the instrument panel, and they include almost all of the indicators I would need. So thanks for the idea!
Missed it previously but it looks like you retained the manual pedal assembly and removed the clutch pedal? Was it a fairly simple process? My truck was a manual but when I removed the assembly I just threw it in a box and didn't pay it any more attention. Was going to trade it with a guy that had auto and needed manual, but I think that deal fell through so I gotta make what I have work. Sucks cause I have two first gen assemblies available and both are manual. Thinking I might rig up a way to make the clutch pedal 2 piece so the lower piece bolts on cause I want to swap back to a stick someday and don't want to tear apart the dash to reinstall a clutch pedal.

Gauges and indicators are a definite pain in the ass. I have way more work in making that cluster and wiring it than I did in swapping the engine in!
It's been a couple years since I did the pedal assembly, and am having trouble remembering. As I recall... I thought I was able to just undo an E-clip and pull that pedal off, and then reassemble. If I remember right, the brake pedal is welded onto a sleeve that fits the shaft, and then the clutch pedal has a bigger diameter and fits right over that sleeve.
I have a picture of it finished. You can probably just compare with what you have and see if what I am saying makes sense. I recall planning to cut the clutch pedal off, and then finding out I didn't need to.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/104_0003.jpg
Then I found this picture, and now I have no clue what I did. It looks like it is part of the pin. I mustt have just cut it off, and then shaped it on the bench grinder.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/000_0123.jpg
Actually... I am sure that's what I did. I found this picture:
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m252/snoopjonnyjon/ranger006-1.jpg
Looks like I cut the pedal off, then shaped it round on the bench grinder, and when I assembled it, I actually put the "pin" (previously clutch pedal) in from the other direction.
Sometimes I can't believe how much I have forgotten about on this truck. :icon_twisted:

I put my new wheels on. Looking groovy! The lettering really gives it a 70's street freak vibe. I'm digging it, man!
I also finished up the windshield washer hose, and the rear axle vent. All that's left is exhaust.
Edit: adding in what was done to the truck to get to this point.
I started building the motor back in 2006. It's a 89 5.0L roller cam block bored 0.030 over. KB pistons, 11:1 compression, 0.563 lift cam, TFS heads, RPM Air Gap intake, 670 Holley Street Avenger, MSD ignition, Crown Vic front accessory brackets, Advance Adapters headers, mounts and radiator. Transmission is a C4, manual valvebody, 3500 stall JW converter. 31-spline 8.8 with Moser axles, C-clip eliminators and Detroit Truetrac diff.
Interior has bench seat in metalflake vinyl, tall Lokar shifter, Autometer gauges, and a Dakota Digital gear/turn/high beam indicator.
Chassis wise it is mostly stock. I converted to manual steering up front and added 90/10 Competition Engineering drag shocks, and in the rear I have Competition Engineering Slide-a-link traction bars.
Body mods include shaved drip rails, shaved fuel doors, shave stake pockets, a few of the cab seams shaves, and F100 Ranger emblems and mirrors. Spun aluminum fuel tank in the front of the box. The tailgate also has the Ford script from a 40's tailgate replacing the block FORD letters it originally had.

It's an electric speedo. I'm using the stock 92 Ranger VSS, with the cable removed, and the Autometer sender epoxied into the end. I think I might have been able to just tap into the original VSS wiring, but decided to use the sender it came with just in case it had a different output type. That sender outputs the two signal wires for the speedo. And of course, the speedo also has a keyed-on power and ground. I liked the idea of a programmable electric speedo since I intend to run several different sizes of tires.
