freon disappears

i have a 98 ranger. ive had the a/c charged twice in one week. it works great for a couple of days then suddenly no freon. its not leaking slowly and the compressor is not cycling. it will work geat when i switch the truck off and 30 minutes later when i start the truck the freon is gone.

go get a set of those plastic quick disconnect tools for fuel and a/c lines.get new a/c O rings there will be 3 of the 2 types of O rings (total of 6) also buy some freon with the die. now unhook the quick disconnects and replace the O rings re connect them and add the freon. its a very common problem with fords the O rings get crushed and leak out freon quick.if it happens again get a cheap black light and when it gets dark check the engine compartment. if theres a leak the die will glow. if you have no freon the compressor will not cycle. good luck

How on earth can you know it's not leaking?

Disappearing refrigerant means it IS leaking.

Or else you've overcharged the crap out of it thinking it was empty when it wasn't.

I've seen the mechanical over-pressure relief act like that.
It's part of the compresssor.
Once they blow, they are shot. Never holds under high pressure again.

As stated, look for evidence of the leakage. When refrigerant leaks, oil comes out with it. That oil should be very evident at the point of leakage.

If the first servicing event was a simple "added a can", I'd suspect over-servicing; then the pressure relief "did its job".

I'd add some flourescent dye to the system.

The hardest leaks to detect are leaks in the condenser and evaporator

But nobody ever wants to believe it isn't something "cheap" or "Easy"
