When I start the truck, before it gets warm, it has a knock to it. Sounds a little like a diesel. Once it gets warm, it seems to go away though. Any thoughts?
 
a knock? how many miles are on it? does it sound like its coming from the botom end? does it increase with engine speed or does it seam to increase at half the engine speed? sounds like maybe somthing has a lill too much play when its cold
 
Yeah, it has 134k. Yes, sounds a like it's from the bottom end as far as I can tell. Actually, it increases with engine speed until you get to 2-2500 rpms and then goes away. Dunno, kinda weird. The guy I just boughtit from claims to have changed oil every 3k. I think he did, because he gave me a folder of everthing that has ever been done to the truck. There's a bunch of papers for oil change, so I think that he did.
 
sounds like engine wear to me...it happens sometimes, even on well maintained vehicles. just because he had the oil changed on time doesnt mean he didnt drive it like a bat-out-of-hell.

what weight oil are you using in it? you might try going to a little bit heavier viscosity at the next oil change. this isnt going to fix the knock...all you can do is try to prolong the inevitable failure of the bottom end.

dont write the engine off just yet. i once drove an old jeep wagoneer around for about a year with a rod knock that never got worse.
 
Not sure what weight oil is in it. I'll do a little heavier when it's due. It only does it when it's cold though and then goes away. Ah well, I'll just run it till it blows.
 
Quick question, do the 3.0s have timing belt or chain. Also, what's the reccomended/typical service interval for em?
 
ok, thanks guys. One more question, when you rebuilt your, did you keep it stock or did you cam it and bore/stroke it? What does a rebuild kit and new pistons/bigger cam run, if you don't mind me askin. I hope I don't have to anytime soon, but if I do I'd like to know what kind of money I'm lookin at. Thanks!!
 
nobody makes a readily available cam for the 3.0. your only option if you want a larger lift/duration is to have your current cam reground (most machine shops can do this, check with them for prices).

the only stroker kit available is the kit from tom morana for $2,000.

for overbore pistons, you should really ask your local auto parts store since prices are going to vary by location. pistons usually run between $60-80 a pop. whether you need/want to bore the engine is your discretion. some engines will still have cross-hatching after 200K miles...some will be badly scored/tapered. you'll just have to see when you get into it.
 
again, you should check with a local parts store to get exact pricing...but i would expect to pay upwards of $600 or so.
