Slack in input shaft

Had some problem getting the mazda tranny into gear while rolling. There is some slack in the input shaft. I can jiggle it sideways. What parts do I need to replace, the input bearing is obvious, - but what else?

Will also change the pilot bearing and slave.

These cars are not very common in Norway, - so my local Ford dealer does not have the part list :shok:
 
I had to do this six months ago. I replaced all the bearings and syncros. You cannot replace the input shaft bearing without removing the entire mainshaft... basically a complete teardown is required. You may also learn (as I did) that the mainshaft is actually ruined from the input shaft moving so much. The input shaft has a female end inside the trans that the mainshaft goes into. There is a bearing there. In my trans, the surface of the mainshaft at that point was all scared up from the input shaft moving so much.

This was all caused by the previous owner failing to install a new pilot bearing when replacing the clutch. He tried to get it out as evidenced by tool marks on the old one. He gave up, pulled out the rollers and just put the thing together.

I ordered my rebuild kit from http://www.standardtransmissionbuilder.com/ They have very good prices and quality parts. I bought the "ultimate" rebuild kit. Be sure to get the two large nuts as they are not in the kit. I also got the mainshaft from them. I paid only $340 for all of this. Not a bad deal in my opinion. There are also technical drawings on his website... should help you out. You have an M5R1 not the R2. The R2 was used in heavier trucks.

You will also need three (two if you don't replace the mainshaft) select fit shims. These MUST be ordered from the ford dealer. DO NOT try to reuse your old shims with new bearings. It will either be too loose or too tight. I have a chart with the sizes and part numbers if you need it PM me. You will need a 0-1" depth micrometer to find out what shim you need.
