Check the axle code on your door sticker (you can look it up here).

With a 3.0 I'd bet it's a 7.5...

The 27 spline Ranger 8.8 is a bolt in, you will have to weld some things on the Explorer axle to get it to work. The FX4 Level II trucks use a 31 spline with drums and a Torson differential, but they are pretty rare to find used but should also be a bolt in should you stumble apoun one. Unless you do alot of hard wheeling or heavy towing the 27 spine 8.8 should work fine though.

28 spline you mean. no worries, i always confuse myself between 30 or 31 spline.
