just wondering what everybodys runing as far as cold air intakes, turbo setups or snorkels. Here is my 89 xlt custom cold air
aftermarket intakes
now using zipties instead of vacumline
 
Hate to burst your bubble there man, but you've effectively created a hot air intake setup. :icon_thumby: The factory setup was already a fresh (cold) air intake and can flow more than the 2.9L can pull.

it may be a hot air intake but gas milage went up from 11 mpg city to 12.5 to 13 city with a heavy right foot. Plus it sounds cooler
 
Uhh... 11? Runnin a 2.9? Something's wrong there bud. I get 17 and 20 in town with my 2.9's and I'm not easy on them.

Fuel pressure regulators and coolant temp sensors are known to go bad on the 2.9. In my experience both will also cause ridiculous losses in mileage.
 
It's not too surprising that warm air would help mileage on an engine running ridiculously rich. Warm air assists evaporating the pools of gasoline in the intake.

I concur; your truck is broken.
 
yep, something is wrong with your truck, i get 19-22 mpg with 31 inch tires and 4.10 gears. For comparison, a friend of mine has a 3500 quad cab dually 4x4 chevy with a 454 and that gets 12-13 mpg. Start testing stuff.
 
okay than i need help. it is throwing code 41 system lean. replaced 02 sensor. went up from 7mpg city to 10mpg. installed custom exhaust went up to 11mpg. took off tailget changed fuel filter installed air filter setup up to 12.5-13mpg. still throwing code 41 please help

if your truck is getting 7-9 mpg, why were you wasting money on mods?
And if your truck is running lean(not enough gas for the amount of air), of course making a hot air intake like you did would help even it out a bit. Not much. Diagnose it. Could be a million things. But modding it at this point (or any point really) is pissing into oncoming wind.

truck is throwing code 41 that says it is running lean but the black soot on the exhaust tip is telling me it is running rich. mods are to make air flow better, better air flow=better milage and performance
 
but how are you going to get better then the stock one that is better then the one you made?
 
First things first, you did NOT make better airflow. You made a ambient air temperature air intake into a hot ass engine bay air intake. The pretty colors and money you spent on this mean nothing. Hell i could adapt a torpedo heater to your air intake for 500$ if you want to REALLY improve your cold air intake.
You need to diagnose it and quit trying to redneck engineer a fix.
What can cause lean?
Lots of things. Intake leak, ANY air leak anywhere in the air intake system, bad oxygen sensor(s), clogged filter, clogged injectors or injector simply not firing right, or even a few OTHER sensors which may seem completely unrelated. Replacing ALL of these would cost more than your truck may be worth. It's going to take some diagnosis on your own behalf.

please help then only code is 41 and is not making any sense i have already replaced o2 sensor and saw a improvement. Still throwing code 41 with no other codes. ran profesinal injector cleaner from walmart 3 times gumout cleaner professinal strength

Yes, but did you *really* help airflow? there is ALOT a science that goes into engines, airspeed is more important, airflow is a broad term.


Just for discussion:
If you put atmosphere air right close to the valve you will loose performance, because you will not get good volumetric efficiency, because the air has no velocity when the valve opens. (an object in motion stays in motion, and object stopped stays stopped)

Thats for the most part true...but even still air will be sucked in by the pistons vacuum effect. Its more or less proven though that air coming in faster is more important than having shear availability of it.

And I can't tell you wahts wrong sir. I can tell you that at this point its obviously not your O2 sensors then. Your o2 sensor is setting the code. Thats like me calling 911 and saying "There are 300 people rioting and looting the neighborhood" and the cops say "well, since he's the one who set the alert off, lets shoot him...should fix the problem"...
bad example...but make sense?
