o/d light blinks

Hello All,
I am new to this great forum, lots of good info.
I have a 99 ranger scab 4.0 4x4, by the listing I should have a 5r55e tranny. I think I have 2 concerns.
One 1st to 2nd shift is very hard some times,
Other times my o/d light blinks at times driving on highway or side roads.
I just got this used vehicle and don't know to much at this time about concerns about rangers.
Please fill me in all

You have a problem with the torque converter lock-up.

That first to 2nd is really first to tq cnvtr lock. Sort of an "artificial" 2nd gear.

The flashing tells you that it isn't locking the torque converter again to make 5th. I'm no auto tranny guy, but I would think you could replace that Tq Converter solenoid to fix that problem. Do more research though.

Well, I have another question.
After reading all the post, I am a little nerves about doing this job. I have done head gaskets and all things around it. But never been deep in a motor and never a tranny.
What should I do ? Can one buy a VB done up and just replace?

does the speedometer work, is your abs light on?

Yes the speedo works and no the ABS light never has come on that I know of.
 
I went for a test drove, when I think its in over drive, I hit the o/d off button and it does drop a gear along with rpms lift. So this means my o/d is working correct.
 
Sounds like it is working.

I gave you about all I can, I don't do automatics.

I learned an awful lot over there (the forum where I sent you).

You gotta do what you're comfortable with.
 
mine is doing the exact same thing.. I dont know jack about one of these transmissions and not much about fords period.

cruising about 70 on the interstate I usually turn 2700-2800rpm and when the light starts flashing going 70 Im turning about close to 3000..

leads me to think my converter isnt locking all the time
 
Wow, mine started this last night.

My 98 4.0 4x4 just had this issue. I think its the regular 4 speed tranny not the 5 speed. I notiuced the OD light flasshing and the tranny started to shift hard into 2nd and 3rd. Shut off the truck last night and this morning it was fine.

Hey there CapK2,
When my light comes on when I am driving, I put trans in N and turn off engine, coast for 10 seconds then restart engine, then lights off. But it will come back on at a later time. Comes on every time I drive to work and then drive home, at least once it comes on each way. Funny thing is, it does not feel different when the light comes on. I fell no change in tranny.

I just dont know where to start.


Trans shop says it could cost high end of 1000.00 to rebuild, thats a complete.

If I try to redo VB then I am putting in about 300.00 in to something that might not be the problem, so my concern is wasting the 300 only to find the problem is still there..
 
Mine defenately shifted hard while it was flashing. Seems OK now, and this was the first time it happened. I'll do some checking over the weekend and see if what I can figure out.

If you have a flashing OD light there is a problem...you need to get vehicle scanned for codes to see what the problem is....also when the OD light is flashing the computer puts the transmission into high line as a safety precaution and the shifts become harsh....but to figure out what is going on you need to get codes pulled.
 
I have a 99 Ford ranger 4.0 mine w/ 98,000 miles is doing the same thing, also my 4x4High and 4x4 low are flashing most of the time and wont engage into fourwheel drive. i havent had it checkout b/c of the $$ issues.. any idea why these lights are flashing??
