Hi everyone, nice site, very very very helpful, I hope to return some of the favors one day in the info I have gotten already.

Anyway, new member here from NY, just picked up a 2004 Ranger XLT, supercab 4x4 with the 4.0 and a 5 speed. Nice truck, good shape, with 64,000 miles on it.

It was owned by two others, so the maintenance history is unknown, so I am going over the truck. Fresh oil, air filter and serpentine belt are done and tonight I will flush and brake fluid followed by new hoses and coolant.

The questions I have are around the tranny, transfer case and differentials. I ordered a service book from Haynes but don't have it yet, however the work looks easy enough.

So, can someone tell me the following:

Manual Tranny - Assuming from what I read here is it the Mazda "J" tranny, which uses Mercon ATF fluid. I am pretty sure this takes 3.9 quarts (bottom of filler hole) correct?

Transfer Case - Same thing, Mercon ATF to the bottom of the filler hole?

Front/Rear Diff - Is it correct, under normal driving, no change is needed until 100k? (if so, I will just check them, but if top off is needed, what do I add)

Thanks folks, I really do appreciate the time and assistance!!

If you have the owners manual, it should specify the fluid types and capacities for each system.

I believe that you are correct that the trans and transfer case both take Dextron/mercon III ATF and you fill to the bottom of the filler hole on level ground.

They claim that no change is needed until 100k, but it wouldn't hurt to change it sooner, as it would allow you to inspect the gears visually for any abnormal wear. I've done it both ways (just topped it off an not worried much and I've also pulled the covers an drained the fluid).

Thanks. The problem is I do not have the owners manual. The dealer is getting me one, but who knows if he really will.

So now the big issue is Mercon or Mercon V...there should be a law against all this private label and fluid swapping crap.

I found you can download the service and owners manuals from Ford, good to know!

Looks like it is normal Mercon ATF fluid for the tranny and TC. Also, the maint specs are as follows if anyone needs to know on a 2004:

Front/Rear Diff - 150,000 miles
Transfer Case - 150,000 miles
Manual Transmission - 60,000 miles
