my friend has a 1996 Jimmie and we got stuck the other day and we notice the 4x4 wasn't working when we press the button for the t-case it turns the front drive shaft but the diff doesn't seem to work any suggestions.

Hmm. I think that one is a live front axle so I would say the diff must be blown up. Or the wheels rolling are whats spinning the front driveshaft as the 4wd on those has multiple common failure points. Switches, motors, ect.

My first college roomate had a late 90's Blazer that had a nasty habit of ripping the vacuum line off that goes to the front axle.

96 has the electrical actuator for the front axle. Take the old one off get some numbers (don't drive it with it out), or take it to the GM dealership and get a new one. Your actuator is bad.

No the actuator is on the top passenger side.
