I have a 98 ranger xlt 2wd with the dinosaur vulcan 3.0L v6 and a 4spd w/ OD (or is that just a 5spd?)
Shifting used to be pretty smooth untill I hit the 120,000 mile mark. but now I have to use more force than usual to get it in to 1st or 2nd. sometimes if I cycle through the gears with the cluth in while at a red light it helps. the clutch seems to be working fine. I think if I knew where to greese the shifter that might solve the problem. but where do I do that?

Try looking at the threads about fluid, I have a similar problem with mine and am going to try some fluid changes today. I will report the results in the future.

Update

I changed the trans fluid on Monday, and have had good success with it. I shopped around and used Castrol Domestic blend. It is rated for Mercon, and went with 3 quarts of that. So far it seems to be shifting better then before. I was downtown most of yesterday with a lot of stop and go, did great, finished it off with some highway and still did good. I will track my mileage like always and see if it changes. So far no need for any additives that I can see. Hope it helps somebody.:D

yeah Im gonna have to try that. I was thinking it was just something I could greese up. I wasnt thinking a fluid change cause it was just 1st and 2nd that was hard but shifting into all the other gears was just a smooth as always.
its worth a try im sure im past due for a fluid change anyway.
