I have a 93 Ranger 4 X 4 , Manual trans , with electric four wheel shift. 4.o L engine, 5.5 lift I finally completed. The truck has been sitting for a couple years. After driving it ,I have a leak on the manual transmission. It looks like it is coming from around the shifter seal or 3 rubber plugs in the back top near the shifter. In a short time (100 miles)alot of fluid has leaked out. Questions; If these plugs are vents, then why is it venting so much now? If they are not vents can I just seal them into place? I don't have my book with me, what type of fluid do I put back in? I am disassembled at a friends house and need to get back on the road tonight any help will be greatly appriciated. Thanks patmedic

Pull the 3 rubber plugs, goop them up with black RTV and put them back in. If you can find freeze plugs, the metal kind, they work too. In a pinch sealing the rubber ones will work fine.

Those 3 plugs are usually the death of M5OD transmissions.

Sorry, it uses Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid

Cup plugs: Dorman 555-108 or Dana 219-3052. They are 16.2mm expansion plugs.

Panicked and did not look in the TRS Technical Library (GREAT RESOURCE) until after I posted. I pulled the right seat and the carpet back and pulled and resealed the plugs with RTV and refilled the trans with Mercon. NO leaks seen so far after driving over 100 hundred miles. Thanks for all your help
