fuel milage?

hey guy's i have a 2wd 4.0 4ald auto and a 3.08 ratio with 215/75/r15
i'm only getting 12.6 mph is that right? not sure what size the tank is i just bought the truck and i'm on my second tank. the gauge was on a 1/4 tank
and i put 17gals in. if this is right any way to improve it? i put a new air filter and fuel filter on and plugs when i bought it.:icon_confused:

That is low. You should be getting around 16-21 mpg depending on your driving style. Does your exhaust smell rich? Anything seem out of place, truck low on power? Are there any check engine lights on?

The original EPA guestimates run from 15 city to 21 hwy, depending on year and options (manual, automatic, axle ratio).

My 4.0 gets 13-14 city, almost a solid 20 hwy. Posts that appear to have credibility show that most people are getting between a low of 12 to a high of 22, depending on driving style and environment.

Once in a while someone will claim 26 or 28 mpg, which I don't believe for a second.

Sounds like you're not calculating your mileage correctly. Here's how to do it: Go to gas station, fill up tank all the way. (until pump shuts off.) Reset your trip odometer or write down the actual mileage of your truck. Drive around till you need to fill up again, and fill the tank all the way again. Take number of miles you've driven during that time, and divide it by the gallons of gas it took to fill it up the 2nd time. My Explorer (4.0, automatic, 4x4, 3.27 gears) usually gets about 15-16 mpg mixed city/highway. My Ranger (4.0 SOHC engine, auto, 4x4, 4.10 gears) gets just under 18 mpg (17.7 to be exact) with almost only highway driving.

+1! Most people don't know how to calculate their milage anymore, it's very simple!

My 93 ranger 4.0L 4x4 5-speed with 31x10.50 mudders gets 17.7 in town with the bed loaded and my lead foot. :headbang: I can't believe you get that bad of gas mileage. something is wrong, maybe you didn't calculate it right. my friends 81 chevy with a built 350 and 39'5s gets around that much :icon_confused:

My truck is close 4L, A4LD, 3.55s, 225-70r14. 15 (all city) 20+ (all highway) the tank is nominal 20 Gallons.

i get around 17 most of the time, stock 235-15's, 3.73's 5 spd man, 4x4 ,'glass cap.
