I have a 93 ranger 4.0 super cab and I what to install a locker in the rear diff. I open up the diff last night and I think she has a ford 8.8 Trac-Loc. It looks just like the picture on the tec page “Diffs for Dummies”. Question: is the Trac-Loc a Limited Slip diff and will a Powertrax No-slip locker fit in it?

Is the rearend tag still on the rearend? If it is look at it, the first numbers you see should look like this 3 L 55, 73. If it's a 4.0 it probably does have a 8.8. If you are buying a locker from a company they should be able to tell you if it will work in place of your current locker.

The No-Slip will not fit into an L/S carrier. You'll need to find an open carrier to use, or find a full-replacement locker.

I defiantly have a ford 8.8 dif. How can I tell if it is an open differential? I thought I had an 8.8" Ford 28-Spline with an open differential. Now I am not so sure. What is an 8.8 Trac-Loc diff? I have a "S" spring in there that I was not expecting. Do I have an open differential? Any help would be great.

If there is an S spring in there, its not an open differential. You have a limited slip (trac-lock) differential.

Thank JohnnyU that helps alot. I think I bought the wrong locker. To be clear the Powertrax no-slip will not fit my diff?

The No-Slip will not fit into an L/S carrier. You'll need to find an open carrier to use, or find a full-replacement locker.

There is a No-Slip that will fit into a L/S Carrier, the Part Number is 92-0688-2827 for his 93 Ranger 8.8. The Open Carrier Part Number is 92-0688-2807 for his 93 Ranger 8.8.

Now with this stated, I recommend that you obtain an Open Carrier to install your lockrite into. I have heard that the relief cuts in the L/S carrier for the clutch packs makes the carrier weaker and more prone to breakage.

Yes, they do make a No Slip for LS 8.8 carriers.

The No-Slip that will fit into a L/S Carrier, Part Number 92-0688-2827, is made for 31-spline axle? Are all the L/S in the ford 8.8 comes with 31 spline axle? How can I tell if the L/S diff in my ranger is a 28 or 31 spline axle? Everything I have read it should have been an 8.8" Ford 28-Spline with an open differential.

If it's the original axle from that 93, then it's a 28 spline.

They make a noslip for a 28 spline trak-lock, I have one.

Yep, Powertrax makes a No-slip locker that will fill an l/s 8.8- I have one in my truck right now...the install was a piece of cake. also, mines a 28 spline axle also. Go to Jeg's or Summit, they both carry them.

There is a way of re-packing the LS carrier to make it more like a locker than a LS, I just can't remember right now. look for AllanD and ask him.
