01 Cougar dies when revvin in park and neutral

My friend has a 2001 Mercury Cougar Zn, 2.5L V6/auto. When I revs it in park or neutral it seems like it just shuts off. Example, I rev to 3k, it just idles down to 0. it has about 103k mi. and I know it needs a tune-up. Will that fix this or is it normal.
 
Sounds like your losing fuel pressure. I am not sure if it has vacuum to the regulator or if the pump is on the frits. Tune it up first though and make sure you do a fuel filter.
