it's a pain in the rear, unless you go with say a jeep D30 straight front axle, that's somewhat more doable.
myself, I found a rolled donor truck with a manual tranny, manual transfer case and 4.10:1 gearing all for $350, swapped my good engine and cab on it's frame and have myself a decent 4x4, until the axle started going south on me...
