i just bought a 2000 ford ranger XLT and the lights on the screen of the radio dont show up at all but when i have on the headlights all the buttons light up. does anyone know the easiest way to fix this? is there anyway to fix it or should i just buy a new radio?

Make sure your dimmer switch that controls the dash lights is turned all the way up.

i checked that right after i read this and it is all the way up. when the lights are on the buttons light-up but the screen that displays the radio station and things like that doesnt light up

Depending on the stereo you have, some have a bulb that can be replaced...I usually try the "Fonz" method first...bang it with my fist...this worked on my Tempo lights quite often, but eventually they had to be replaced...

The stereo isn't hard to remove in most cases...remove the trim and pull out the bracket holding it in...the light is usually on the top side if there is one...if you have a removeable face plate type you may need to remove it and clean the contacts...

Edit: Ooops...the 2000 may be installed differently than my 88...if you have one of the newer stereos there are four holes in the sides of it and these are release access holes...stuff a small screwdriver or the special tool they have for this purpose and the stereo slides out...
