other that using flare wrenches, rust loosening spray and trying to keep crud out of the system is there anything else to watch out for? washing the steering fluid out of the engine bay and hood pad is on the list too. what is the electric switch in the line for??

You pretty much got what you need. If you are just replacing the line and not reusing it cut the hard line at the pump and just take the fitting at the pump out. The switch is a cutout for the A/C, that senses high pressure and cuts the A/C off when that happens. I have always had good luck taking some Dawn dish soap and spraying it on the oil, let it soak and spray it with a garden hose. Don't use a pressure washer on the hood insulation you will have a big mess.
