My nephew has a 94 Ranger 2wd 4.0L. He called me today and asked if i would come look at his tranny that is acting up. Problem is that it is not shifting. It goes into Reverse and Drive fine, but will not shift into second, third, or overdrive. I told him to put the selector in "1" and try to manually shift it into "2" to see if it will shift, no go. The tranny only shifts into second if you give it a lot of gas and kind of feather the gas to get it to shift. The last time i've been into a tranny was a 350 turbo. So my questions are, does this tranny have a governor valve (kinda what it sounds like to me)? If so, is it accesible from the outter part of the tranny? Is there a drain plug on this tranny, or should i just go ahead and buy a new pan gasket? Is there some type of filter or screen go into the pick-up in the valve body? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, justin:icon_cheers:

Check for vacuum at the modulator located on the right side of trans, make sure it has good vacuum if it does could be modulator itself.

There is a governor on the output shaft in which you will have to pull tail housing...but i would check modulator first fo r vacuum.

Is it a hard line vacuum, or a regular old rubber hose?

Both rubber on both connecting end and hard line in the middle between the 2 rubber ends.

I went to drop the tranny pan and drain the fluid. When i got the pan off and onto the ground, i noticed this little guy in the pan. Anyone know what this is or where it goes?

Help, please!!!

Yeppers thats a band strut off of one of you bands..more than likely your second gear band..which is probably broken ...time to pull tranny and have a rebuild done.

Yep, i pulled off the valve body and more peices came falling out. So i went ahead and pulled the tranny.....time for a re-build.
