Guy on Pirate is selling a Mustang 8.8 with 4.56s, which I need to match my 4.56 D35 Pig, I don't know anything about these except they are 28 spline, I assume they have provisions for coils and links and would be an overall PITA to convert to leaf spring use, I also have no idea on the width, does anyone know anything else about these? I'm pretty sure it's not ideal for our applications but just wanted to make sure.

when i get home this evening I can pull a measurement on the old lady's mustang for you...and I think that some of them were 31 spline if I'm not mistaken.

I *think* the diff is completely centered, which might cause issues. Possibly 4 lug instead of five. But then again I could be making things up again.

What year Mustang? I think that all the 8.8's had a centered rear but varied in width, just like the Rangers do. Mine is a 31 spline but most are 28.

steal the gears and swap them into a exploder axle. YES that are centered axle, YES they are the same size as a B2, ranger etc 28 spline 8.8 AND 7.5 axles (on one side! and only the older ones!) but why put a narrower axle in thats no stronger than you current one? if its cheap its worth it for the gears alone. PM me for details. my brother has a 93 mustang and i have a 7.5 axle AND the exploder 31 spline under the b2 so i can do any comparisons you need right here.

Well, it's missing brake parts as well and it's just something I'd rather not mess with. I think I'm going to buy the new gears and re gear the sploder 8.8 I have laying around. I found Yukon 4.56s for under $150 brand new.

as long as your 8.8 is in good shape and whom ever puts it together is OK with using old shims and such it shouldnt be to expensive but install can get PRICEY.

Well I found a package deal of Yukon 4.56s with master install kit for $229, plus a few more bucks for crush sleeve eliminator and pinion nut, I plan on doing the install myself, might as well use this as a chance to learn. Also undecided on the locker, I'll probably go with an Aussie.

i have never heard a bad word about the aussies and i am thinking about buying one for my d35 but i am cheap..... as for installing your own gears, i recommend you hook up with a friend or someone who has done it before so they can guide you through the process. i have a friend who does mine for free and i will eventually sit down with him over a case of beer and watch him.

Well, I've read up on it a bunch and with prior experience with swapping a carrier and such I think I can handle it, it also helps that I will be able to work on it on the side and take my time because it's not the current axle in my rig.

All mustangs 7.5 and 8.8 were a 28 spline axle, none came with 31 from the factory. Both the 7.5 and the 8.8 axles would interchange between housings and carriers.

Some of the higher end ones (like Cobra's) had the 31spline, but they didn't have a solid axle. I don't know what the new Shelby GT's and GT-500's have now though, but I doubt the '500 is packin' a 28 spline.

But for all practicality you are right, 97% of the Mustangs built with 8.8 axles had 28 spline 8.8's.

But the Cobra's and 500's are IRS. Which will interchange with a Ranger or Exploror 8.8.
