You would be correct in wanting the 3.75 backspacing. My question is WHY? Do you have some sort of deathwish for your balljoints? With 3.75 inches of backspacing that means 6.25 inches is out past the WMS then when you hang atleast a 12.50 wide tire on said rim the ball joints tend to scream for mercy just pimpin out by the mall. On another note I ran 15x12 steel wheels with 35x16.5x15 mickey H/P's on my dana 35. They had 3.50" B/S it wasn't happy but sugar sand was a cake walk!

Balljoints aren't normally the problem, its the wheel bearings. Several here have run 10s with 3.75 BS without issues though, so it probably just depends on how careful you set up the preload (and torque down the outer locknut if you got manual hubs). The 4.5" BS would be easier on them in any case though.

(yes, 3.75 will stick out more than 4.5)

iam running 3.25 backspacing wheels an yes wheel bearings are the weakest link here.. i check mine periodically. been running them for 2 years..

Thank you guys for the informative and straight answers! I have issues with the rear of my tires contacting my radius arms, thats one reason I want wide backspacing. I could say stability, but that is kindof a bogus argument, 1.5" total width? big deal. I'm going from the stock 6" (or7) rim to a 10" rim and 35x12.5 BFG boggers. I'm gaining in width and diff clearance.

you can't run a 4.5" backspace and 15" wheel without coming very close to the tie rod and knuckle(less than 1/4").3.75 is factory, run with it.
the 10" wide wheels will give you the wide stance you want and put those boggers away from the radius arms.(it will be nice to see some pics of you ripping on some boggers)wait-BFG boggers?:taunt:

Thats right. Rare, and unique BFG Boggers.

I got a set or worn down 35" BFG mud terrains and grooved them into boggers basically. They are like a tractor tire with a handicap.

I've been running 3.5" backspace for the last 10 years on 35's and have replaced the ball joints once.......although I pull the tires off and check wheel bearings once every 3-4 months......

I mean, what's 20 bux every couple months..

are we supposed to be able to read that second line?that color makes my eyes hurt

I have always been under the impression that the stock wheels were in fact 4.5 back spacing...

That, I'm pretty sure, is what the Explorer wheels I had were.

I am running 15x8 with 3.75 BS, on 33x12.5 tires, and I only have very slight rubbing on the radius arm. I don't think I'd id run 15x10's on a 12.5 tire... I think the wheel is getting too wide at that point, but that is just me, I like having the option to air down if I want, without running the risk of blowing a bead. I know some will disagree with me on that though..

You have a point about a 12" tire on a 10" rim. But these BFG boggers will not live that long. One summer at the most. Then I plan on something wider. Like some SX's.

Ask someone with an 04 Ranger (4x4 with ABS) Its more like "whats a couple hundred bucks every few months". :D

Yes, all stock 15x7" RBV wheels are 4.5" backspace (15x6 ones are 3.75).

yeah i just checked my sploder,4.5 on a 15x7.pretty tight on the tie rod.

a 12.5 tire is only about 10.5 inches wide,a 10 inch wheel is too wide for only wheeling.
i run a 10" rim for better tire wear, handling and stability with my set of all terains.(maybe you've noticed on your 15x8's that the outer part of the tread don't touch the ground at over 20-25 psi?)
airing down below 10psi might be trouble but i have no need to.
