its a fun truck i like it
what did you do to the truck to make sure it will handle the turbo, like the intake, fuel things of that nature

Are there any ill effects of running the turbo off of one bank instead of remote mounting and using both? Would there be more lag caused by only 3 cyinders feeding air into the turbo as opposed to 4,6 or 8? Just curious and honestly, I know very little on the subject.

all 6 are feeding the T3. it would be a bad idea to run the turbo off of just one bank as there would be uneven cylinder pressures creating all sorts of problems. As for the setup the 4.0 is completely stock. I built a kit in 36 hours from spare parts lying around and the only fuel system mod is 30# injectors and the ecu is bone stock-the fact that the 02 is unplugged leaving the ecu in open loop. The truck is going to be down for new remanufact heads and gasket, pushrods and rocker shafts. Before its up and running again i hope to convert to MSII for full tuning ability and i still need an wideban

So if i wanted to put a turbo on my xploder sport all i have to do is plumb it up and drop in #30 injectors?

Can you get a better picture of both banks coming together? Just curious how you did it. Looks like you flipped a manifold or used one from the other side. Oh yeah, and how did you get oil to it?

You can do that but Im not going to say its absolutley going to stay together. Ive had good luck you may throw a turbo on there and blow it up or you can have the same luck ive had. However even my setup isnt optimal. I need it tuned and i need a bigger fuel pump, requlator......

I like the way that was done. How did you do the oil lines?
turbo cat

just a 2$ brass T from lowes off of the oil pressure sender . the feed is braided aeromotive hose with crimped fittings (a hydraulic store put the fittings on the hose for about 15$. Then i just tapped the timing cover at the bottom driver hand side for a fitting for the return

Is the exhaust going to be a concern against the plastic reservoir of the power steering pump?

no hasnt been it has 1" of clearance i built a shield out of a 3" piece of pipe and temporarily wrapped it with foil so far its been great. you can see that in one of the pics above

im really thinking about it. i have a freind that has a turbo and piping for cheap. but the hardest thing would be converting it to mass air

'87 sucks more to convert over compared to an 88+, but look in the tech library for 'MAF Conversion'. It's has the wiring differences for either an 86 or 87 model already laid out. I just got the model specific diagrams and sorted it out on paper when I did mine. It's really not too hard. I think getting it running right is going to be the hard part. But that's just my opinion.

I converted mine to mass air. It was really easy.
Here's what I did electronics-wise:
Swapped in MAF computer
Added a stock MAF sensor from a 5.0L Mustang
Installed 24# injectors
That's it.
It ran like a champ and I had to do zero tuning. Probably would have run better had I had a way to tune it, but it saw 15lbs of boost everyday without any probs. (It was my DD) Fun fun truck.

I am not saying that the diagram on the site is gospel, but it looks like he is going to have to do a few minor wiring mods in order to keep the ability to pull codes.
See: C. EXAMPLE OF A PIN OUT COMPARISON BY NUMBER BETWEEN AN '86/'87 SPEED DENSITY SYSTEM '90 MAF SYSTEM
http://therangerstation.com/tech_library/MAF_Conversion.html
He still needs the pins and the plug for the MAS, consider hitting the junk yard for the MAS pins, wiring and plug for the MAS from a early 90's Stang or similar. (You might need to get the entire harness, it takes a while to dig it out) I used off a '93 HO harness. Ford Dealership part dept will need to see example pins (be prepared), or I believe they can be purchased from Ebay.
And it's strange that the 2.9L ran fine with the 24# injectors. I ran into problems with 19s at idle. I used an IST Air Adjust that's mentioned on that page to somewhat compensate for it. Maybe it was just the MAS I used? It was from a 3.8L Taurus, but I also tried a 65mm MAS from a Stang with similar results. I ended up just giving the Stang MAS to a friend of mine that was trying to diagonse a problem.

I meant I followed Bob Marr's MAF conversion write up. It was really easy. I think I used an IST MAF harness to do mine.
Beats me why it ran fine, but it did. I drive it to work every day for a year and a half or so. The Ford computer did a superb job of compensating for my lack of EFI knowledge at the time. LOL It was probably a tad rich at times, but drive-ibility never suffered and it idled like normal.
I got to stop talking about it or the next thing you know I'll have another Ranger in a kazillion pieces in my shop with me wondering "how'd I get here?".

Yes, it definitely is a strait forward swap. I am going to try and sell my old MAF computer & other stuff once my 5.0L is in, hopefully someone would make use of it.. But I'm guessing it won't be going until next spring, I need more money, but I am close to having the motor done.

Hahaha, you probably wouldn't be saying that once the 460 project is going. You're freaking nuts, I can't wait to see what that thing will dish out. :icon_thumby:

there are other options like converting to stand alones like megasquirt and or stay speed density and get a dyno tune. Im not 100% on the 2.9s engime managment but im sure theres some things that can be done
