what do you mean the ABS comes on? it just activates without pushing the brake pedal?

theres a number of things to check here.

my first thought would be warped drums on the back. rangers (and ford trucks in general) are notorious for this problem and it causes the rear brakes to grap terribly. in this case you'd need to have the drums machined or replaced (your probably looking at a complete rear brake job).

while you have the drums off, check the brake adjustment (how tight the drum fits over the shoes), and verify that the self adjuster isnt siezed.

its also pissible that gunk has built up on the vehicle speed sensor inside the rear differential. removing it and cleaning it with brake cleaner usually cures any problems with it.
