I have a 90' Eddie Bauer B2 and am looking for some input on a swap for a 4L from a 92' explorer sport (2dr). The exploder is a standard and my B2 is auto...can I use my B2 tranny (as it is in VERY good condition), will I run into computer problems from the standard comp. or will it be ok?:c-n:

You must aquire and use a 1990-1992 4.0 Auto trans computer.

The TCC and 3-4shift solenoid in your A4LD trans are computer controlled.

I would if I were you keep both the 5sp trans, clutch, flywheel,
computer and transmission wiring harness from the 5sp trans as
I'm sure you will need them eventually

a old a4ld will QUICKLY bite the dust behind a 4.0, no matter how "good" a shape it is in (if that can even be said for a a4ld), i say get ur knee better and run the 5spd

too bad about your knee,i shattered my right knee a few months ago.i think an auto-4.0l setup in a b2 would be nice.controlled power and easy wheeling.
correct me if i'm wrong but aren't there some internal differences between the 2.9 and 4.0 spec a4ld's ?maybe sell or trade the slpoder 5 speed and your current tranny for a fresh 4.0l spec a4ld

No ford never played ratio games on the auto.

they did however use a completely different torque converter.

the A4LD torque converter use in the 4.0 has ~50% more stator vanes
than the one used on a 2.9.

This means that a 2.9 torque converter will slip more on a 4.0 and
thus generate a lot more heat.

Ah ok, well I wish I could make my knee better but am in the service and no knee gets better in the Army. I will just get a new trans from Raptor. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/aod.htm#Level 3 . This is the best I could find for the money, and will take all the abuse (I hope) I can dish out.

PROPERLY built an A4LD can be rather durable.

the problem is that finding an auto transmission guy who can
rebuild one "right" is like finding a breeding pair of Unicorns

My brother can do a wonderful job with an A4LD, the trick is getting
him in the proper mood to actually work on one....

I have seen this "mood shift" accomplished only three times.

Once for himself
Once for his Wife
Once for my mother.

the chances of it happening a fourth time? Essentially Non-exsistant.
He recently bought an AWD Aerostar, but it's a '97 and it has a 5R55E in it.

He also bought a Ranger with an A4LD, I know he bought it because he
called me to ask for a mazda to swap into it....

If the A4LD in my Aerostar dies I MIGHT swap a 5sp
into it.... But it's far kore likely I'll simply junk it.

I KNOW I won't save the engine, I don't know how many miles
that 4.0 has on it but I know this '94 Aerostar is atleast the
THIRD aerostar that particular engine has been in....
