Dave, you have a wicked truck. You build dessert racers professionally? You must see/build some wild rigs man.
Ever since I learned about Baja racing (specifically the Baja1000) about 10 years ago I have dreamt of having a truck like this.

Something that I dont understand is to do with the suspension. (At ride hieght) The available up travel always appears to be far less than the available droop.

Why is this?

I *think* that it is this way so that it makes your shocks (as opposed to spings) handle the job of absorbing the landing of the truck. Do they have different valving for out travel VS in travel in the shocks?
eg, if the "droop" valve was more open than the "stuff" valve on the shock then the tire/axle could fall away easily and then offer some support when absorbing the landing of the truck.

Anyways. Do you race any of the SCORE races? That is only one I know about, (I live in Canada). I hope/plan to come down this November and watch this years Baja1000.

(Eventually, I plan to get a F150/250, rip the box off, build a deck/frame to hold 2 spares and extra fuel + jack + etc, do up the suspension to handle jumping, then just go have fun. It cant be a money pot for me, cause, it would just be another toy. Cage, suspension, bumper, spare tires, period. Is there any rules against external over the cab cages? What are your thoughts on this? I assume I'm missing some key points, considering I've never *actually* been around this style racing yet. "No substitute for experience.")

EDIT:
This is what I mean by "over the cab external cage". I know the green is hidious, but I used it to illistrate where I would run tubes. It would connect to a traditional roll bar at the back of the cab.
