What are some good indications of an exhuast leak and if there is one does it effect your mpg?

Exhaust leaks near the engine don't only leak OUT, they often leak IN as well
and the air contamination of the exhaust IS detectable by the HEGO and
Cat Monitor (if equipped).

The management system sees this as a lean condition even if it isn't and pushes more fuel into the engine....
