The other day i was on a mountain drive with my Aunt, on the way to visit my father in rehab.

I'll have to admit she is probably the coolest person I know. She's a big time business woman, traded her Z3 for a FJ and Harley, smartest person I've ever talked to, and she's in a biker gang. She's a BAMF to say the least.

We were talkin about the open road and her rides. For a while I've wanted to buy a bike and that pushed me to the threshold, I'm buyin a bike now. I was lookin on Craig's List today and I found a bike that just really stood out to me. It's a 1973 Yahama DT 360. It was the owner's father's bike, and the father gave it to her husband. It has been treated well. Only needs minor work, gas tank and carb need cleaned, speedo and lights need to be wired.

We were talking about when I could check it out and I mentioned that I'm a guitar teacher and teach right in their area on Monday nights. Well, as fate had it, her husband and 10 year old daughter really want to learn guitar.

Tonight I'm stopping by to check out the bike and maybe negotiate trading the bike for it's worth in guitar lessons.

So if all goes according to plan I'll be trying to figure out how to fit a bike in the back of my stepside...

Is that street legal?

It looks like it is the same style of bike as my '76 Honda XL-350, but mine has signals, head light / tail light and license plate bracket.

Mine was $20, needed a battery and a carb kit to run. It needs a rear tire (mine doesn't have much tread left) a set of throttle cables and a choke cable, but what I have works for the moment. Those older bikes unless they are in perfect shape are not worth a whole lot, most times you can get them next to free. I have a couple others that don't run for parts, probably not more $50 in the whole pile of them.

I know mine wouldn't hang with a remotly modern bike, but it is more than enough to get me into trouble.
 
Well like i said, it needs speedo, blinkers, and the head light wired up. You cant get bikes for that cheap in CO.

I'm just lookin for a good starter bike. Something to work with and learn on. Most of the older bikes for sale are pushin 500 around here.
 
Sweet. I've been able to find a couple bikes in the dump...first was a '79 Honda Express, like this:

Damn, that thing was scary. I tipped it over going around a corner and then sold it for $100. It was hella fun while it lasted though.

The second one was like a 250 or something, don't really remember. It was missing a ton of stuff so I ended up just taking it back to the dump...motor was locked up I think

You just said lights, I didn't know if that was just a headlight / tail light or what.

It helps that my dad is a tractor mechanic, and farmers are looking to get rid of their old bikes taking up space in their machine sheds.

Where did you find that at? I have always wondered what my Honda has for power.
 
I just threw it in a google search and came across that.
 
Dude. I have had more friends hurt on one of those than any other single model. One of them spent 6 months in a full body cast. Be careful or it will add you to the list. Seriously, don't try to ride it fast offroad or it will pitch you over the bars onto your head. Those are pogos on the back and it handles like crap. Motor was OK. If you are mellow, she will treat you right. If you hammer it, it WILL hammer back.

Yeah, they are more of a trail bike than a dirt bike, mine is like 380#'s with four inches of rear suspension travel. The only reason they go fast is to get you to the trail IMO.

Seems whenever I shift into third gear there will be an impending crash in the near future... so I just stay in second.:icon_thumby:
 
Someone else joining the DT family! :clapping:

The shocks on the back aren't too bad, I would put them above the shocks on my original DT400, but I definitely prefer my aftermarket ones on my other DT400 (more travel and a softer ride).
 
Nice find LBF. I wish I could have found a deal like that when I was looking, but I think I will keep my XR600R. Keep us informed on any builds.........
