Got a dead 2.8 in a BII. This rig will be used strictly off road with a plow on the front in a very slow speed pushing/plowing and tree dragging environment. It will probably never be out of 4x4 low ever again. What is the absolute easiest swap/most readily available setup. I don't car if it's Ford, VW, Edsel or Yugo. Just need to get it done as cheap as possible without a lot of in depth mods/hassles. What are your suggestions? Have cutting torch...will use it. :D

Given what it is, I would think another 2.8L would the most simplistic since it's carbed.

2.9L or 4.0L are EFI and were never carb, you would need to do a little (a lot) of wiring. There have been talks in the 2.9L forum about use of the 2.8L distributor in the 2.9L (and would essentially work in the 4.0L OHV), but you would need to adapt a carb on it somehow. And that's even if it would work, it's not been proven yet.

The 2.6, 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 OHV share the same bellhousing pattern.

Anything else, you're going to have to swap out the trans and possibly make mounts and tranny cross member + a whole bunch of other stuff. I don't know how cheap you can get parts for.

I believe there's been a few decent deals on 2.8Ls in the used parts section of the forum that would get you going again.

Just curious on what happened with the original motor?

Pete
