Can't tell you what gears or if it has a limited slip, but it is an 8.8 with 31 spline axle shafts (it is the same as in the Explorer, only wider and with the 5x5.5" wheel bolt pattern)

k thanks,
so when im lookin for a locker or traction system,
what do i go by?
the axle, or the gears or what?
Also what brand do you recommend

You need to go by axle type (8.8) and axle splines (31 spline). I recommend the Detroit lockers.

the regulat lockrite locker is about 300, the no slip is 400(rough cost), also code 19 Conventional non-Positraction Differential with 3.55 gears

Just for in the winter and since we have ALOT of snow here, and he may go thru a LITTLE bit of mud, just to try it out

both will be fine, the no slip you will not hear the ratcheting sound, that is basically what i have learned between the both

The "extreme traction" you are refering to is a full locker (ie Detroit that replaces the entire diff). You will be hard pressed to find a lunch box locker that replaces the limited slip diff in the axle in the F-150. To get a lunch box locker, you will have to get an open diff and install it in it.
Get yourself a Detroit that replaces the entire diff. They are more expensive, but they are the absolute best full lockers on the planet.
Just like any other locker, they will release when you are turning to allow the outter tire to spin faster than the inner tire.

ok thanks, and is the locker making the sound constantly or just when its locking a wheel that wouldnt normally be locking

The locker makes noise when you are ONLY turning.

for a 31 spline?
I still would want to replace the whole carrier with a Detroit.

For $50 tell him to weld the diff and NEVER drive the truck on the road because it will eat the tires.

A 2003 F-150 with a 4.2 or 4.6 will have a 31 spline 8.8, run of the mill 5.4 trucks got a 9.75, and F-150 7700 trucks got a 10.25 with 7 lug wheels.
The bolt pattern for the rims was a metric measurement (5x135), not the 5x5.5 standby of yesteryear. If you do get different rims you may also need to get different lug nuts, the stock rims center off of the hub and the nuts have a flat surface to hold the wheel on rather than conical.
Here is what I want to get for mine someday. I only wheel it during deer hunting, mainly just want to get rid of the one wheel peels in traffic and getting around in snow. I have no need for a locker and any of its quirks.

Stuff is stupid common for the 8.8, the guts are the same as the Explorer, just one of the perks of dealing with the best selling vehicle on the planet.

Why do you say they are much better? I ran one for 2 years with a ton of 4x4 trips on it and 35 and 36" tires and it still looked like new when I pulled it out and sold it. The guy who makes the Aussie locker was one of the creators of the Lockright.

+1 to 85_ranger 4x4! No one else mentioned the possibility of this thing having a 9.75 axle, and a proper breakdown of application at that. Don't buy the parts till you know for sure.
