My auto tranny has gone to crap. I am looking to do a manual swap. I found quite a few threads about how to do it, but what do I look for in a donor vehicle? The truck in question is the one in my sig. Do I just need any 4x4 Ranger or Mazda with a 4.0? I read about a fm145 and m5od. Is the m5od what is in all 5spd rangers?

Any 4x4 Explorer, Ranger with a 4.0, B4000, or Navajo with a manual tranny will work as a donor for the tranny. I dont know 100% if you can take the pedal brackets and other parts from them aswell.

The M5OD was the only manual tranny used behind the 4.0.

Just to clarify some more,

The FM series trannies (fm145 and fm146) were only used back in the 80's with the only exception being some 90 and 91 2.9L V6 rangers.

The M5OD came in all 4.0 and 3.0 equipped trucks, all 89+ 2.3L equipped trucks and a few 90 and 91 2.9L rangers.

The M5OD is superior to any other manual trans used in a ranger to date.

The only engines that have the same tranny bolt pattern are the 2.0/2.3/2.5 and the 2.9/4.0. The 4 bangers don't match any V6's and the only two V6's that match are the 2.9 and 4.0 although the 4.0 has a bigger flywheel/clutch (I think). The 3.0's are different.
