what is the door code, drivers side door under the axle section, the code will help up, i just found out this week i have 3.55 gears  my code was 85, otherwise look on the front axle, there will be a tag with the gear ratio on that

count the number of bolts on the diff covers, that will tell us what axle you have
Boggin

ok hold on a sec
Boggin

theres 10 of them, wouldnt that be a D35?
90rangersuper
06-06-2008, 04:00 PM
the rear, you will most likely have the 7.5 up front 10 bolts = d35, 12 bolts = d28

the front has a damn Independant suspension..:@........
anyways what is better, D28 or 35?

If so it doesn't have any ford parts on it....i'm not sure what they used for axles, I beleive they were similar to Toyota's tho.

I believe the Mazda's of those years use a Toyota similar rear axle...
On your Rear axle, are there bolts on the back? Or is it smooth, like where you would pull the carrier out of the front of the axle, rather than a cover plate on the back?
Boggin
06-06-2008, 04:23 PM
the bolts are on the front
BlackBII
06-06-2008, 04:26 PM
Ok, then yes it's similar to the Yota axles..
looking around, Im seeing a lot of references to a 4.30 or so ratio...
Does the front diff have a tag? It'll have the same ratio...
Edit:
Just found this:B2600, 7.5 in or so, 4.10 or 3.70 ratio

Jack up the back end of the truck, put it in neutral, and turn one of the wheels. Count how many times the driveshaft turns while you turn the wheel one complete revolution. If it's about 3.73 times, you have 3.73 gears, if it's about 4.10 times you have 4.10 gears, etc.

They are Mazda axles not ford or nissan. Mark your driveshaft with some bright paint or the like right near the rear yoke. Jack up one rear wheel and mark it like the driveshaft. Turn the wheel exactly 2 full turns while you watch the driveshaft and count the number of times it turns. Almost 4 will be 3.90 a little over is 4.10. If your rear axle is welded then you will have to raise both wheels off the ground of course. and you would only turn the wheels 1 turn then. You don't have a d35 or 28 in the front either, it's an all aluminum Mazda independent.

1 turn of an axle will only turn the carrier 1/2 turn so you have to turn 1 axle 2 turns to turn the carrier 1. The exception is if your spiders are welded, you have a spool, locker or very good L/S. You would have to get both wheels in the air and turn 1 full turn in that case.

Ive never really checked out the front susp. but i will take the laptop with me and go check your strategy
Boggin
06-06-2008, 06:16 PM
ok, so i was just out there, i had to jack up 2 of the wheels, and i realized, when i turn the wheels the driveshaft dont move, yea i forgot all about my transmission was gone

Are your diffs welded up/locked or no?
If not, you have to do like blackbronc mentions (one tire of the axle off the ground, the other still on the ground). Turn the wheel off the ground exactly two complete revolutions, while counting the driveshaft (pinion yoke) rotations. As said, 3-3/4 turns is 3.73:1, just over 4 turns = 4.10:1, 4-1/3 turns = 4.30:1, etc.

i tried, i had to lift up the 2 wheels, didnt you read all my posts?
and when i got two of them up, i can turn my wheels, If i turn one wheel forward, the wheel on the other side will go the opposite way, and when i do, the driveshaft dont move at all.. seems my trannys gone
Sasquatch_Ryda

If i turn one wheel forward, the wheel on the other side will go the opposite way
Which indicates an OPEN differential, which will just freewheel like that and not rotate the drive shaft. One tire has to be on the ground to keep it from spinning backwards. We do know what we are talking about here.
Boggin
06-06-2008, 08:23 PM
we sure dont...but i cant spin my wheel when just one is on the ground,
and my tranny is gone anyways, so my drive shaft dont move nohow..
4x4junkie
06-06-2008, 09:17 PM
OK, now I got you, yeah the tranny is in gear or seized or (?).
You could unbolt the driveshaft from the axle flange and then check it (or maybe try it on the FRONT axle with the hubs locked, as both ratios have to be the same. Be sure the t-case is in 2WD.
Edit: Check that. If it's in 4WD, things won't turn.
