I need help with rear Diff.

I have a 99 ranger 4.0 4x4 with 157k. A few days ago i started driving and noticed that every time I hit the gas or braking it would jerk..I checked the joints and suspension everything..then i noticed when i had someone drive it and i looked under, it looks like when you hit the gas the whole rear-end pivots up and down like changing pinion angles does anyone have a clue..im goin to try to make a video of it later but if anyone could help that would be great.
 
what u are experiencing is called axle wrap, we need more details on the type of rear susp and if u have a lift, if its stock height i would say your u bolts are lose, and i would highly suggest tightening these before any serious damage is done
 
Yes check if there is any loose components. Maybe your shocks are badly worn.
 
Thanks for the reply.. Every thing on the truck is stock. I've tried tighting the u-bolts and it still does it..i was just going to buy new ones and try that havenet driven it to much since it started doing it though.. Oh ya forgot i replaced all shocks and sway bar links about a month ago
 
A lot of the later rangers make a low thud/jult/jerk when taking off and comming to a stop.

If we're refering to the same thud/jult/jerk then I'm assuming it's your slip yoke. The temp fix is to lube it up.
 
Yes, some winding of the axle on the leaf springs is normal (and it may look like a lot). An actual "clunk" "pop" or other noise would not be normal however.
If it only did it on accelerating from a stop, I'd agree that it's the driveshaft slipyoke, although this wouldn't show itself during braking.


Some things to check if it's coming from the rear:
Leaf spring/shackle eye bolts,
u-bolts (sounds like you already checked them, if they're tight and in good shape, no need to replace)
u-joints (although this would usually show as a vibration as well)
Check for a broken leaf in the spring pack (this often causes the truck to lean, but not always).

My 99 4x4 XLT had that problem. There is a TSB about lubing the slip joint of the driveline. That helped cure mine.

Another problem that contributed to it was soft spring bushings. I bought energy suspension (poly) bushings for a 97 Ranger, and they fit perfectly, but had to cut some bolts to change them. Took quite a long time due to the cutting.

Your problem sounds like the drive line slip joint lube problem. Do you need a link to the TSB?
 
No thank you I searched the TSB on ranger station thanks for all of your help i will lube the slip yoke and see how that does..Thanks Everyone :icon_cheers:
