I've had my 86 bII for a little over a year now and I've burnt up one A4LD trans . I put in a spare A4LD trans but that one only lasted me 3 weeks. So I'd like to know some good trans swaps for my 2.9L bII cause rebuilding my A4LD is not within my budget.

M5OD 5 speed is the preferred RBV (Ranger based vehicle) transmission, it is the most reliable and strongest stock transmission, if you don't mind shifting. It is the same length as the A4LD so driveshafts are also the same.

Is the clutch assembly fairly easy to put in?

PRovided you can either
A) remove your Y-pipe
OR
B)remove the radius arm crossmember
OR
C) you have a lift kit that uses a "drop" for the radius arm brackets
OR (finally)
D) you have a Body lift on your vehicle

ANY of these things make dropping the trans to replace the clutch relatively easy
(the trans weighs only about 90lbs, akward for one person (even if exceptionally strong)
and fairly easy for two people.

BTW, saying "Crappy A4LD" is a redundant statement.

Crappy is an adjective where a verb is more appropriate.

Might I suggest you say "Fucking A4LD" instead?

Damn it! I NEVER thought all those english classes would prove useful... I guess I was wrong.

:icon_cheers::thefinger:Fucking A4LD is right. Had one in my 89 and I swapped for the manual.

i did the swap 2 weekends ago, no body lift, and we wiggled the tranny past the exhaust crossover, total PITA but much easier for me to remove the y pipe - live in the salt belt, that is about the hardest part there, btw putting the clutch pedal in will piss u off as well, remove the parking break, make it much easier
